LHH is exclusively conducting this search for our client, a privately held insurance general agency and a leading provider in health insurance and benefits administration products, headquartered in Orange, California. The legal department is intentionally lean, highly visible to leadership, and deeply integrated into day-to-day business operations.

Position Overview

The Associate Attorney will support the EVP and General Counsel in managing a wide range of commercial, regulatory, and operational legal matters across the organization. This role is hands-on, fast-paced, and highly business-embedded, offering exposure that is uncommon in more siloed corporate legal environments.

This is a hybrid position, and candidates must be able to work onsite a minimum of two days per week.

Core Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, redline, and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, including vendor, services, technology, and insurance?related contracts

  • Provide legal research and analysis on regulatory, statutory, and compliance issues, including multi?state insurance, privacy, and emerging regulatory frameworks (e.g., CCPA/CPRA)

  • Support contract lifecycle management, including review of historical agreements and entry into the companys customized Galaxy contract management system

  • Assist the General Counsel in managing the organizations legal affairs to ensure compliance with applicable laws and internal policies

  • Manage and interface with outside counsel as needed

  • Support intellectual property matters, including trademark administration and renewals

  • Partner closely with internal stakeholders across HR, finance, compliance, sales, and operations

  • Contribute to process improvement in a small, high-volume legal department where adaptability and initiative are critical

Required Qualifications

  • J.D. from an ABA accredited law school

  • Admission to the California State Bar strongly preferred (bar eligibility acceptable in limited circumstances, depending on scope of work)

  • Minimum 2+ years of relevant experience, ideally in:

  • In-house legal departments

  • Corporate, commercial, or transactional law practices

  • Strong legal research skills

  • Sound judgment, strong written communication skills, and comfort working directly with senior leadership

  • Willingness to work onsite and operate in a highly direct, no-nonsense environment

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience in regulated industries (insurance, financial services, healthcare, benefits administration)

  • Comfort operating with limited structure and evolving priorities

  • High grit factor with the ability to manage volume without constant oversight

  • Direct communication style and respect for hierarchy and process
