POSITION

SUMMARY

The

Licensed

Athletic

Trainer

provides

comprehensive

athletic

training

and

healthcare

services

to

student-athletes

participating

in

the

district's

interscholastic

athletic

programs.

The

primary

responsibilities

of

the

position

include

the

development

and

implementation

of

programs

for

the

prevention

of

athletic

injuries;

evaluation

and

treatment

of

injuries;

administration

of

first

aid

and

emergency

medical

care;

development

and

administration

of

rehabilitation

programs;

and

coordination

of

appropriate

return-to-activity

and

return-to-play

protocols.

The

Athletic

Trainer

serves

as

an

integral

member

of

the

school

athletic

and

student-support

team

and

works

collaboratively

with

student-athletes,

coaches,

parents/guardians,

school

nurses,

administrators,

physicians,

and

other

healthcare

professionals

to

promote

the

health,

safety,

and

well-being

of

student-athletes.

ESSENTIAL

DUTIES

AND

RESPONSIBILITIES

Athletic

Injury

Prevention,

Evaluation,

and

Treatment

Develop

and

implement

comprehensive

programs

designed

to

prevent

athletic

injuries

and

promote

the

health

and

safety

of

student-athletes.

Evaluate

athletic

injuries

and

illnesses

and

determine

appropriate

treatment,

follow-up,

and

referral.

Provide

first

aid,

emergency

medical

care,

injury

management,

and

follow-up

care

within

the

scope

of

professional

practice.

Provide

treatment

and

rehabilitation

services

to

student-athletes

to

facilitate

a

safe

and

appropriate

return

to

athletic

participation.

Provide

treatment

and

rehabilitation

services

to

students

who

require

assistance

returning

to

physical

education

classes

during

the

school

day,

when

appropriate.

Evaluate

student-athletes'

readiness

to

participate

and

provide

appropriate

recommendations

regarding

athletic

participation

and

return

to

activity.

Refer

injured

or

ill

student-athletes

to

physicians,

hospitals,

emergency

facilities,

or

other

appropriate

healthcare

providers

as

necessary.

Coordinate

continuity

of

care

for

student-athletes

throughout

evaluation,

treatment,

rehabilitation,

and

return

to

activity.

Concussion

Management

Conduct

and

maintain

baseline

concussion

testing

for

student-athletes

in

accordance

with

district

procedures

and

applicable

Connecticut

requirements.

Evaluate

and

monitor

student-athletes

with

suspected

or

diagnosed

concussions.

Implement

and

monitor

appropriate

return-to-play

protocols

for

concussed

student-athletes.

Communicate

with

parents/guardians,

coaches,

school

nurses,

administrators,

and

healthcare

providers

regarding

concussion

management

and

return-to-activity

requirements.

Athletic

Event

Coverage

Attend

and

provide

athletic

training

services

for

all

designated

home

athletic

contests

and

other

athletic

events

as

directed

by

the

Athletic

Director.

Provide

appropriate

medical

coverage

for

practices,

competitions,

tournaments,

and

other

district-sponsored

athletic

activities.

Attend

preseason

coaches'

meetings

and

other

athletic

department

meetings

as

directed

by

the

Athletic

Director.

Assist

coaches

and

athletic

staff

in

identifying

and

addressing

health

and

safety

concerns

related

to

practices

and

competitions.

Emergency

Preparedness

and

Safety

Develop,

maintain,

and

regularly

update

Emergency

Action

Plans

(EAPs)

for

district

athletic

facilities

and

programs.

Ensure

that

Emergency

Action

Plans

are

consistent

with

applicable

Connecticut

requirements

and

recognized

standards

of

athletic

healthcare.

Maintain

appropriate

and

current

standing

orders

and

ensure

they

are

reviewed

annually

by

the

district's

directing

physician.

Develop,

communicate,

and

implement

appropriate

health

and

safety

protocols

for

coaches

and

athletic

staff.

Assist

in

monitoring

environmental

conditions,

including

heat,

hydration,

weather,

and

other

factors

that

may

affect

student-athlete

safety.

Ensure

that

applicable

State

of

Connecticut

laws,

regulations,

and

requirements

pertaining

to

the

health

and

safety

of

student-athletes

are

followed.

Respond

appropriately

to

athletic

emergencies

and

coordinate

emergency

medical

services

when

necessary.

Collaboration

and

Communication

Collaborate

with

school

nurse(s)

to

provide

appropriate

healthcare

and

support

to

students

during

the

school

day.

Facilitate

effective

communication

among

student-athletes,

coaches,

parents/guardians,

school

nurses,

administration,

physicians,

and

other

healthcare

providers

concerning

the

health

and

physical

status

of

student-athletes.

Work

with

the

district's

physician

and

other

medical

professionals

regarding

injury

management,

treatment

protocols,

standing

orders,

and

student-athlete

care.

Provide

coaches

with

information

and

training

regarding

appropriate

injury

prevention,

health,

safety,

and

emergency

procedures.

Confer

with

coaches

regarding

appropriate

protective

equipment

and

athletic

training

supplies,

including

medical

kits

for

individual

athletic

programs.

Provide

education

to

student-athletes

and

coaches

regarding

injury

prevention,

hydration,

conditioning,

concussion

awareness,

and

other

relevant

health

and

safety

topics.

Records,

Equipment,

and

Compliance

Maintain

accurate,

timely,

and

confidential

records

of

athletic

injuries,

evaluations,

treatments,

rehabilitation,

referrals,

and

return-to-play

decisions.

Maintain

appropriate

documentation

in

accordance

with

district

policies,

professional

standards,

and

applicable

laws

and

regulations.

Maintain

the

athletic

training

room

and

related

equipment

in

a

clean,

safe,

sanitary,

and

orderly

condition.

Monitor

athletic

training

supplies

and

equipment

and

recommend

replacement

or

replenishment

as

needed.

Assist

with

the

selection

and

maintenance

of

appropriate

medical

and

athletic

training

equipment.

Maintain

current

professional

certifications,

licenses,

and

required

training.

Day-to-day

athletic

operations,

including

registration

coordination

and

uniform

management.

Perform

other

duties

and

responsibilities

as

assigned

by

the

Athletic

Director

or

administration.

Additional

Athletic

Responsibilities

Assist

with

the

assessment

and

certification

of

wrestlers

for

appropriate

weight-class

participation,

as

required.

Support

the

development

and

implementation

of

district-wide

protocols

that

promote

continuity

of

care

for

student-athletes.

Serve

as

a

resource

to

the

Athletic

Department,

school

staff,

students,

and

families

regarding

athletic

health

and

safety.

PREFERRED

QUALIFICATIONS

Previous

experience

as

an

athletic

trainer

in

a

secondary

school

or

interscholastic

athletic

setting.

CPR/First

Aid

and

AED

certification

(instructor

certification

strongly

preferred).

Experience

with

concussion

management

and

return-to-play

protocols.

Knowledge

of

Connecticut

interscholastic

athletic

regulations

and

requirements.

Strong

organizational,

interpersonal,

communication,

and

decision-making

skills.

Ability

to

work

effectively

and

professionally

with

students,

families,

coaches,

administrators,

school

nurses,

physicians,

and

other

healthcare

professionals.
