POSITION DUTIES
The Comptroller of Marylandâs Compliance Division is looking to add new tax auditors to their Business Tax Audit and Individual Tax Audit teams. We offer flexible work schedules that include telework options and opportunities to work from the field (outside of the office) for certain audit assignments. Business Tax Audit:
The main purpose of this position is to audit business entities for compliance with the State of Marylandâs revenue laws and regulations administered and enforced by the Comptroller of Maryland, and to identify and assess unpaid taxes or fees that may be owed. Audits will be conducted on-site and at times remotely as well as in-state or out-of-state as appropriate. The auditor will be provided with on-the-job training and is ultimately expected to perform audits independently.
Individual Tax Audit:
The main purpose of this position is to perform complex income tax audits of individual and pass-through entity tax filings. This work involves auditing the federal income tax returns of individuals and pass-through entities to determine whether amounts reported are accurately stated and carried to the corresponding Maryland tax returns appropriately and in accordance with applicable state and federal tax laws and regulations. Certain audits may involve identifying and verifying various sources of digital income comprised of cryptocurrencies and other crypto assets by using specialized software, artificial intelligence (AI) tools, and open source data.Â
PLEASE NOTE: The list of eligible candidates from this recruitment will be used to fill several positions on both teams.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor''s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university or a Bachelor''s degree from an accredited college or university with 30 credit hours in Accounting and related courses, including or supplemented by 3 credit hours in auditing.
Experience: One year of experience performing financial and compliance audits of a State agency, grantee, business or other entity.
