    Student Support - Special Education Teacher Position Title: Special Education Teacher Department: Student Services Reports To: Building Principal/Student Services Administration FLSA: Exempt Date: May 2010 Revision Date: October 2022 POSITION PURPOSE The teachers of Mentally and/or Physically Handicapped students are responsible for planning and implementing an effective program of instruction based on students' Individual Education Programs (IEP's). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Included but not limited to: Develop and implement an appropriate Individualized Educational Program (IEP) for each student by assessing student needs, determining appropriate instructional goals and objectives by designing instruction to meet students' needs, and evaluating student progress. Schedule and conduct IEP conferences and parent conferences to elicit parental input and support to communicate the educational and behavioral goals, and to complete all necessary paperwork. Select instructional materials and adapt curriculum to meet student's individual needs. Provide specially designed instruction in subject areas as dictated by the student's IEP. Reconvene an IEP team and modify IEPs, as appropriate, for students new to teacher caseload. Perform diagnostic testing to determine academic levels. Utilize research-based instructional and behavior support techniques to implement IEP goals and objectives. Exhibit caring attitude toward students. Use positive reinforcement to elicit acceptable academic and social behavior from students. Develop behavioral support plans for students who present challenging behaviors in school. Collect, maintain, and report up-to-date anecdotal records of progress monitoring for all students. Alert student, parents, and staff, in a timely manner, if progress is inconsistent or not meeting expected outcomes. Serve as the chair of the multidisciplinary team for the purpose of re-evaluating each of their students. Report unique or complex students in need of re-evaluation to the school psychologist for consideration.

    Function as a resource and provide support for special education students who are participating in regular education classes. Function as a resource for general education teachers who are involved in the instruction of special education students. Team-teach with regular education peers in an inclusion setting. Maintain effective, ongoing communication with parents and school personnel. Model non-discriminative practice in all activities and maintain student confidentiality. Establish a consistent classroom instructional schedule; maintain the physical environment of the classroom for organization and presentation purposes; and in general, maintain an orderly learning environment. Work collaboratively with Content Specialists in the requisition of materials and supplies. Plan and oversee the activities of the Teacher Assistant, if assigned. Maintain familiarity with the state standards, regulations, and guidelines for special education. Adhere to all timelines for paperwork and students service, as defined by those regulations. Maintain certification at the state and/or national level; assume responsibility for professional growth and keep materials, supplies, and skills up to date. Perform all other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENT Education: Bachelor's Degree Certification: Pennsylvania Certification in Education of the Mentally and/or Physically Handicapped Highly Qualified certification in accordance with PDE regulations. Experience: Any work experience in certification area(s); Student teaching experience in a supervised education program at an accredited institution Language Skills: Ability to evaluate, interpret and analyze. Should have strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write reports, and effectively present information to parents and administrators. Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts, math reasoning, and math logic. Reasoning Skills: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Other Skills & Abilities: Proficient computer and software skills are required. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with tact and diplomacy. Ability to prioritize a wide variety of diverse situations and changing priorities. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Educational policies. Exhibit sound judgment.
