BAR MANAGER / WORKING MANAGER
This is not a behind-the-scenes office management job. During all shifts, you'll be behind the bar while also overseeing the staff, guest experience, events, and overall operation of the venue.
ABOUT MAD OAK
Mad Oak is a busy, independently owned neighborhood bar with an indoor bar, patio, roof deck, food program, DJs, private events, watch parties, trivia, and other weekly programming. We're looking for someone who can help keep everything organized, communicate clearly, support the staff, and confidently take charge when needed.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Bartend while serving as the manager on duty
Lead and support bartenders, barbacks, security, kitchen staff, and other team members
Maintain strong service standards and keep shifts running smoothly
Handle guest concerns and staff issues calmly and professionally
Make real-time operational decisions
Communicate shift expectations and hold staff accountable
Coordinate with promoters, DJs, private-event hosts, vendors, and other outside partners
Make sure scheduled events and reservations are properly prepared for and executed
Oversee opening, closing, cleanliness, stocking, and shift-change procedures
Monitor staff breaks and compliance with house policies
Help train and onboard new employees
Complete manager logs, incident reports, and other shift documentation
Assist with scheduling, ordering, inventory, event planning, staff communication, and other administrative duties
Communicate clearly with the other working manager and ownership about problems, priorities, and follow-up items
Help identify operational issues and develop practical solutions
QUALIFICATIONS
At least two years of bartending experience in a busy bar or restaurant
Relevant leadership, supervisory, lead bartender, or management experience
Strong bartending skills and comfort handling high-volume service
Good judgment and the confidence to take charge of a shift
Clear, direct, and respectful communication
Ability to give direction, hold people accountable, and work collaboratively
Calm and professional when handling difficult guests or staff situations
Organized, dependable, and attentive to details
Comfortable working with DJs, promoters, private-event clients, and vendors
Available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and special events
Working knowledge of responsible alcohol service and California meal-and-rest-break requirements
Basic comfort with scheduling, email, spreadsheets, POS systems, and written shift reports
WHAT WE RE LOOKING FOR
The right person is an experienced bartender who enjoys being behind the bar and engaging with guests but is also ready to take responsibility for the entire operation during their shifts. You should be approachable and supportive while still being willing to set expectations, address problems directly, and follow through.
Because this position shares responsibilities with another working manager, communication and collaboration are essential. We're looking for someone who can contribute ideas, divide responsibilities fairly, and help create consistency across every shift.
