Biology Biotechnology Faculty

The Biotechnology and Molecular Biosciences Residential Faculty member will provide high-quality instruction in biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, and related biological sciences, with primary responsibility for courses supporting the college's biotechnology curriculum. The faculty member will develop and deliver engaging lecture and laboratory experiences that emphasize current biotechnology techniques, including molecular methods, nucleic acid analysis, biomolecular separation, cell and microbial techniques, and contemporary laboratory instrumentation. Responsibilities include maintaining and updating curriculum to reflect advances in biotechnology and workforce needs, mentoring students in undergraduate research and work-based learning experiences, supporting student success, and collaborating with faculty, industry partners, and other stakeholders to strengthen biotechnology education and career pathways. The faculty member may also teach general biology or other related courses based on departmental needs and will participate in college service, assessment, program development, and professional development activities.

Essential Functions

50% - Instruction and Student Learning

Provides high-quality instruction to students in biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, general biology, and related disciplines in classroom, laboratory, online, and/or hybrid environments. Develops and delivers engaging, student-centered learning experiences; prepares instructional materials; evaluates student learning; provides timely feedback; and maintains academic support hours to assist and mentor students.

15% - Biotechnology Laboratory, Curriculum, and Assessment

Develops, evaluates, and continuously improves biotechnology curriculum, laboratory exercises, instructional materials, and assessments. Incorporates current biotechnology methods, laboratory instrumentation, safety practices, and emerging technologies into courses. Participates in course, program, and institutional assessment activities and uses assessment results to improve student learning.

15% - Student Research, Mentoring, and Work-Based Learning

Mentors students participating in undergraduate research, Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), independent study, internships, and other experiential or work-based learning opportunities. Supports students in developing laboratory, research, scientific communication, problem-solving, and career-readiness skills.

10% - Program Development and Industry/Community Partnerships

Contributes to the development and growth of biotechnology and molecular biosciences programs and pathways. Collaborates with biotechnology, biomedical, healthcare, research, university, and other industry and community partners to ensure curriculum remains responsive to workforce and transfer needs. May participate in advisory committees, recruitment activities, articulation efforts, internships, and employer engagement.

5% - College, Department, and District Service

Participates in department, division, college, and district meetings, committees, assessment activities, accreditation and program-review efforts, student recruitment and outreach, and other activities associated with the responsibilities of Residential Faculty.

5% - Professional Development and Discipline Currency

Maintains professional competence and remains current with developments in biotechnology, molecular biosciences, laboratory technologies, research, and teaching and learning. Participates in professional development through conferences, workshops, research, professional organizations, industry engagement, scholarship, and other appropriate activities.
