Major Duties

Under general supervision, the Black Scholars Matter (BSM) Advising Assistant advises students individually or in groups on academic choices, career planning, and campus resources. Offers holistic mentorship and supports artistic/creative academic pathways.

  • Assists students throughout the year with academic and college life skill-building, providing support, advisement, mentoring that embodies a holistic approach to an academic pathway to prepare students for career readiness.
  • Facilitates purposeful and relevant educational workshops, programs, and activities for Scholars.
  • Works with the BSM team and Scholars to create persuasive content for targeted campaigns and oversees creative visual content (newsletter, videography/photography/social media), thus providing Scholars with practical, hands-on experience which supports career readiness.
  • Maintains frequent communication with other BSM Empowerment Squad members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field.
  • Equivalent to one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level.
  • A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for the required experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge, appreciation and understanding of African/Black/African American Culture.
  • Understanding of best practices for advisement and student mentoring. Knowledge of higher education trends.
  • Understanding of digital marketing and brand messaging. 
  • Ability to assist with marketing and PR campaigns.
  • Knowledge of social media and social media management.
  • Understanding of event planning and event management and knowledge of best practices in photography and videography. Understanding and have familiarity with print, typography, and layout skills.
  • Knowledge of first-class written and spoken communication.

 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • Classification: 3079 / SSP I / Grade 2
  • The anticipated PART TIME HIRING RATE is $ 2,801 per month. The part time salary range for this classification is: $2801 - $3963.75 per month.
  • HOURS: Part Time; 25 hours per week; Monday through Friday.
  • This is a Temporary 6 months position.
  • The position is currently hybrid (3 days in office, 1 day remote); however, this is subject to change based on student and/or operational needs.
