Job Description
The School Bus Driver Trainer is responsible for training, coaching, evaluating, and supporting school bus drivers and transportation personnel to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant student transportation operations. This position provides classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel training, safety education, and operational support while ensuring compliance with all federal, state, local, and district transportation regulations. The School Bus Driver Trainer plays a critical role in developing driver competency, improving transportation safety performance, supporting new driver recruitment and retention efforts, and reinforcing operational accountability standards across the district.
Bus Driver Trainer - Responsibilities
Responsibilities
- Provides behind the wheel instruction training and technical support for new and existing school bus operators required to obtain a class "B" CDL and proper endorsements through Texas Department of Public Safety. Transports students to and from school and extracurricular activities.
- Conduct classroom and behind-the-wheel training for new and existing school bus drivers.
- Provide instruction on transportation safety procedures, district policies, defensive driving, student management, emergency response, and operational expectations.
- Prepare drivers for CDL permit and skills testing requirements.
- Conduct refresher training and remedial instruction as needed.
- Support district initiatives related to transportation safety, operational excellence, and customer service.
- Observe and evaluate driver performance through ride-alongs, field observations, and route monitoring.
- Provide coaching and corrective action recommendations to improve driver performance and compliance.
- Identify unsafe driving behaviors and recommend additional training interventions.
- Assist with accident investigations, post-accident evaluations, and retraining activities.
- Ensure compliance with TEA, DPS, DOT, district, and departmental transportation regulations.
- Conduct safety meetings, emergency evacuation drills, and compliance audits.
- Maintain accurate documentation of training records, certifications, evaluations, and compliance activities.
- Monitor driver credential expirations and required certification renewals.
- Assist terminals with route coverage, operational readiness, and driver support when necessary.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice, and training to staff.

Work and tasks are often straightforward, routine, structured and guided by established policies and procedures. Little, if any, independent judgment is required, outside of making basic choices in the selection and application of established methods. The job receives frequent, ongoing supervision.
