    Job Description

The Amazon Security Experiences (ASE) organization is the data intelligence backbone of Amazon Security. We build and operate the data platform that powers security insights, builder experience analytics, and tooling decisions across Amazon"s security ecosystem. Every insight surfaced to security leadership, from builder productivity trends to security issue quality metrics, flows through systems our team designs, builds, and maintains.

We operate at scale, processing large volumes of security and operational data daily through hundreds of pipelines consisting of transformations, reporting queries, ingestions, and infrastructure management scripts. Our engineers work directly with source systems across AWS and SDO (Security, Developer, and Operations) data domains to procure data, convert it into structured formats, build large-scale processing pipelines, design analytical data models, and maintain infrastructure with the highest security and compliance standards.

We are seeking a Business Intelligence Engineer I to join our Security Data Intelligence (SDI) team. In this role, you will build and maintain BI solutions (datasets, queries, reports, dashboards, and analyses) that inform how security leadership makes decisions across Amazon. Working on well-defined problems with guidance from senior engineers, you will maintain data lineage understanding, apply analytics and visualization tools, and deliver reliable insights on schedule. You will partner with teams across ASE, BizOps, MapSec, and other security organizations to translate business questions into data-driven answers that serve the broader Amazon Security organization.

    Key job responsibilities

Learn and apply team BI best practices when building data artifacts including ETL, data models, queries, and reports. Measure and improve dataset quality across owned solutions. Automate manual processes where possible.

Maintain understanding of relevant data lineage: sources of data, how metrics are aggregated, and how BI is consumed and acted upon by security leadership. Learn the business context behind the team"s data infrastructure and metrics definitions. Investigate data anomalies and validate outputs against source data and business logic.

Build small to mid-size BI solutions, or components of larger solutions, to answer straightforward business questions with data. Be proficient in SQL, maintain straightforward ETL, and create data structures using schema definition languages. Use analytics and visualization tools (e.g., QuickSight, Excel, Tableau) to deliver actionable insights.

Write secure, stable, testable, and maintainable code with minimal defects. Get analyses and code reviewed before deployment. Document solutions for ease of use, interpretation, and maintainability. Handle data in accordance with Amazon security and compliance policies.

Solve straightforward problems where what to accomplish is clear but how requires skill and knowledge. For example, building a dashboard that surfaces security issue quality trends, or creating a report that tracks builder productivity across SDO tooling data. Troubleshoot and research root causes, taking ownership or ensuring clear hand-off.

Take well-defined requirements and deliver on schedule. Seek input and guidance from team members on technology and business context. Participate in team design, scoping, and prioritization discussions. Communicate findings effectively to a technical audience.

Work effectively with customers (e.g., business teams, Data Scientists) and internal partners to ensure deliverables meet expectations. Partner with peer BIEs and others on the team. Help train new peers. Participate in the interview process.

Apply descriptive statistics to analyze security and operational data. Be familiar with inferential statistics and know when such methods are appropriate. Identify trends in metrics and segment along suitable dimensions to reveal deeper dynamics.

Assume responsibility for code, queries, reports, and analyses you inherit or produce. Ensure proper access control, data integrity, and auditability. Track security risks, mitigate issues, and escalate in a timely manner.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
