Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Performs routine and specialized patient laboratory testing.
  • Obtains laboratory specimens from patients as needed.
  • Posts laboratory results to their proper destination.
  • Process microbiology cultrues and other specimes as needed.
  • Follows establised procedures for quality control performance and documentation. Reports discrepancies to the Laboratory manager or designee.
  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly or as needed maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate. Performs calibration of equipment as required.
  • Troubleshoots problems with instruments, equipment, reagents and patient specimens. Documents situation approproately in department log and notifies the Laboratory Manager or designee.
  • Maintains work area, cleans bench, restocks supplies and notifies manager of low stock.
  • Participates in new lot correlation studies, proficiency testing, computer validation, procedure updates and accreditation readiness as needed.
  • Participates in orientation and training of students and new laboratory employees.
  • Performs DOT and non-DOT urine collections and BAT tests when requested following the established guidelines.
  • Seeks additional assignments/projects during periods of lower than normal work volume.

Job Requirements

General Requirements • MT (ASCP), MLT (ASCP), CLS (ASCP) or equivalent certification within 12 months of hire. • BLS certified within 60 days of hire Education • Completion of an accredited Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Science program and registered or registry eligible Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Good communication skills, accurate writing and spelling, ability to reason and problem solve. • Computer skills. • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job
