CDL-A Truck Driver

American Driver
  • Waukegan, Illinois

    Job Description

Lake County drivers: real OTR experience without running all 48 states.

The average load on this fleet is about 500 miles, and from the Chicago area you are never more than about 2 days from home. New CDL-A holders welcome.

    What you earn

    • Paid every week during training
    • $1,000 a week guaranteed for your first 3 months solo
    • $1,000 to $1,500 a week once solo
    • 1,800 to 2,500 miles a week
    • $15 per stop except the first and last
    • Weekly direct deposit

    Your week

OTR lanes through the middle of the country, drop and hook and live freight. Out about two weeks, then home. Several terminals in the area.

From CDL school to your own truck

    1. A recruiter calls you and reviews your CDL and driving record with you.
    2. Orientation, 2 days at most. Hotel paid, one-way bus ticket reimbursed, $300 for orientation once hired.
    3. 4 to 6 weeks with a mentor: backing, trip planning, logs and fueling. You are paid every week.
    4. Your own assigned truck, about 1.5 years old on average, automatic or 10-speed. For your first 3 months solo, your pay will not drop below $1,000 a week.

    Straight answers for new drivers

    • "How often will I see home?" Every two to three weeks, and you stay within about 2 days of home.
    • "Does my CDL school count?" If it was 120 hours or more, yes.
    • "What if I have a problem on the road?" Loads are planned for you, and your driver leader picks up the phone.
    • "Will one ticket disqualify me?" Not by itself. Up to 2 moving violations in the past 2 years is accepted.
    • "What if my first solo weeks are slow?" You still get at least $1,000 a week for your first 3 months solo.

    To qualify

You must be 21 or older with a Class A CDL. New drivers need at least 120 hours from a CDL school; otherwise, 6 months of recent experience. We accept up to 2 moving violations in the last 2 years and no DUI/DWI in the last 10. You will also pass a DOT physical and a hair and urine drug test.

    Once you pass 30 days

Full medical, dental, vision and prescription coverage, a 401(k), an employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation, yearly raises, and a free online degree for you and one family member. Pets and riders are allowed; trainees can bring a dog once training is finished.
