CDL Class A or B Steel Yard Hand / Backup Driver

Pay: $20.00–$22.00 per hour, depending on experience

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM
Lunch: 1-hour lunch break
Position Overview
We are seeking a dependable, hardworking Steel Yard Hand / Backup Driver with a valid Class A or B CDL to join a busy steel distribution operation in Tulsa, OK.
This position consists of approximately 90% steel yard duties and 10% backup driving. The primary responsibility is assisting with daily steel yard operations, including loading and unloading materials, organizing inventory, preparing orders, and maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.
The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on, physical work, has experience in an industrial or warehouse setting, and is willing to step in as a backup CDL driver when needed.
Important: This is primarily a steel yard labor position, not a full-time driving position. A valid CDL Class A or B is required.
Key Responsibilities
Steel Yard Operations – Approximately 90%
- Load, unload, move, and organize steel products and building materials.
- Assist with pulling, staging, and preparing customer orders.
- Maintain an organized yard and ensure materials are stored safely and properly.
- Assist with inventory management and material handling.
- Support daily shipping and receiving operations.
- Assist customers and coworkers with loading and unloading materials.
- Perform general yard maintenance and housekeeping duties.
- Follow all company safety procedures when working around heavy materials, trucks, and equipment.
- Work closely with yard personnel to ensure daily operations run efficiently.
Backup CDL Driving – Approximately 10%
- Operate commercial vehicles requiring a Class A or B CDL when backup driving coverage is needed.
- Assist with local deliveries and vehicle movements as assigned.
- Perform required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Properly secure loads and follow applicable DOT safety regulations.
- Maintain safe driving practices and comply with company transportation policies.
Qualifications
Required:
- Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Experience with loading, unloading, and handling materials.
- Willingness to perform physical steel yard labor throughout most of the workday.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic, dependable attendance, and a safety-first attitude.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively with a team.
- Comfortable working in a physically demanding industrial environment.
Preferred:
- Previous experience in a steel yard, lumberyard, building materials distribution, or industrial warehouse.
- Forklift or other material-handling equipment experience.
- Experience securing and transporting heavy materials.
- Previous local delivery or commercial driving experience.
Work Environment
- Primarily outdoor steel yard operations.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and handling materials.
- Working around heavy steel products, forklifts, trucks, and industrial equipment.
- Approximately 90% yard work and 10% backup driving.
