City of Newport Rhode Island C a r e e r o p p o r t u n i t y Seeking CDL DRIVERS Posting Date Monday October 19 2026 Closing Date Monday November 2 202 6 Department Public Services & Utilities - various divisions Position Titles ALL FULL TIME OPENINGS • Maintenance Pers on • Sweeper Operator 3rd shift • Laborer Equipment Operator Examples of essential job functions • Operates heavy equipment such as a backhoe front end loader dump truck vactor truck street sweeper and similar equipment to maintain construct and repair City streets sidewalks parks grounds facilities and sanitary sewer and storm water systems. • Performs physical manual labor using hand and power tools to dig ditches and trenches patch roadways and perform related tasks around gas pipes trees wires cars personal property and fellow workers. • Performs street and sidewalk work such as setting curbing laying asphalt concrete and brick and cold -patching potholes. • Performs grounds and park work such as tree trimming and planting brush cutting mowing leaf removal field maintenance and fence installation. • Cleans inspects and repairs sewer and storm drain lines catch basins and manholes including excavation with proper shoring and work in confined spaces. • Performs skilled trade work such as welding masonry carpentry electrical and concrete work to maintain municipal facilities and assists in estimating materials and costs. • Assists in the Citys ice and snow sanding and removal program and responds to emergencies such as storms and downed trees including nights weekends and 24 -hour call -outs. • Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment and keeps records of work performed and equipment usage. • Attends required safety training may direct seasonal workers or provide on -the-job training to new employees. Minimum Entrance Qualifications • High School diploma or equivalent and one 1 to five 5 years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment depending on position some positions require an Associates degree or journeyman -level knowledge of construction trade work. Any equivalent combination of education training and experience that provides the required knowledge skills and abilities will be considered. • Knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment machinery and hand and power tools for some positions working Minimum Entrance Qualifications continued knowledge of construction trades and local building and safety codes. • Mechanical aptitude and motor skills to operate heavy equipment machinery and tools in a safe and efficient manner. • Ability to read and interpret construction project plans and blueprints and to recognize unsafe working conditions so that appropriate safety precautions are taken. • Ability to identify and resolve problems prioritize and perform assigned tasks in a detailed efficient and timely manner and to follow written and oral instructions. • Ability to interact effectively with co -workers other utilities and members of the general public. • Ability to perform strenuous physical work outdoors in all weather conditions lift and carry heavy objects up to 100 lbs. work at heights and in confined spaces and work nights weekends and emergency callouts as required. LicensesCertifications • Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver s License CDL License and hoisting license . Appl icants who do not hold both at the time of hire must o btain them within six 6 months of hire. • Preference will be given to applicants who already hold a valid Cl ass B or higher CDL and hoisting license. • May require the abilityto obtain welding and flagger certifications.
