Job Title: Certified Medical Assistant

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for performing a variety of duties, to include involvement in both the clinical and administrative areas such as assisting physicians with patient care and handling clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinical services.

LOCATION: Clinical office

SUPERVISON RECEIVED: Reports to Clinical Manager/Operations Manager. Employee to report all questions, issues, concerns, and suggestions to Clinical Manager who will then report issue to Operations Manager. If situation warrants, the matter will be escalated by the Operations Manager to the Company Owner if warranted. Employee may at any time request an update on the reported situation from the CHIT Supervisor.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  1. Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, dressing, preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures; charting; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls, and providing pertinent information.
  2. Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; completing timely messages/tasks from provider or other staff members; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately.
  3. Maintains and updates patient records utilizing internal and external records, including medical histories, treatments, medications, discharge summaries and referral notes.
  4. Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols; cleaning exam/procedure rooms between patient visits to maintain infection control; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms.
  5. Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned including respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency situations; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor.
  6. Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities that vary according to state law, which may include drug administration through various routes including injections; prescription verifications with physician's orders; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, and home care; quality control methods.
  7. Files and stores medical records in the patients' electronic health records.
  8. Pulls and processes patient medical records as needed.
  9. Ensures patient medical records are retrieved for physicians and departments in a timely manner as needed for patient care and auditing and other purposes.
  10. Routinely collects all discharged patient medical records to ensure all records are secured in the Health Information Department.
  11. Accurately files all returning patient medical records.
  12. Maintains neatly assembled medical records.
  13. Outgoing/incoming calls to patients as needed to ensure accurate medical records are received for upcoming visits.
  14. Ensures all computers, printers/scanners and faxes are working properly.
  15. Answers telephone, screens calls, takes messages and provides information.
  16. Participates in educational activities.
  17. Maintains strictest confidentiality.
  18. Other duties as assigned.
