Position Overview
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides direct care and daily living support to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities within a home and group home environment. Working under the supervision of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN), the CNA assists residents with personal care, mobility, health monitoring, and activities of daily living while promoting dignity, safety, and independence.
This role requires compassion, patience, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to delivering quality care in a supportive environment.
Reports to: Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)
Key Responsibilities
Personal Care & Daily Living Support
- Assist residents with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and personal hygiene needs
- Support residents with mobility, ambulation, transfers, and repositioning as needed
- Assist with feeding and meal support while following dietary guidelines and care plans
- Encourage resident independence and participation in daily activities whenever appropriate
- Ensure residents are clean, comfortable, and treated with dignity and respect at all times
Health Monitoring & Observation
- Observe and report changes in resident condition, behavior, or emotional status to nursing staff promptly
- Take and document vital signs and other health-related observations as directed
- Monitor for signs of illness, injury, skin concerns, or safety risks
- Assist nursing staff with resident care activities and non-clinical support tasks
Medication Assistance
- Assist residents with self-administration of medications under the supervision of licensed nursing staff
- Support medication routines by bringing medications to residents, reading labels, and documenting assistance provided
- Assist with topical medication applications as directed
- Maintain accurate Medication Administration Record (MAR) documentation related to medication assistance
Home Environment & Safety
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe living environment for residents
- Assist with light housekeeping duties, including cleaning common areas, kitchens, and bathrooms
- Check emergency supplies and medical equipment at the beginning of shifts
- Follow safety protocols and report hazards or unsafe conditions immediately
Communication & Team Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with nurses, caregivers, and interdisciplinary team members regarding resident needs and concerns
- Participate in shift handoffs and provide accurate resident updates
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines
- Serve as a supportive liaison between residents, families, and the care team
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete care documentation accurately and timely
- Record personal care activities, observations, medication assistance, and behavioral changes appropriately
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, healthcare regulations, and documentation standards
Resident Advocacy & Emotional Support
- Foster positive, respectful relationships with residents and families
- Provide companionship, emotional support, and encouragement
- Advocate for resident dignity, preferences, and individualized care needs
- Help create a warm, supportive, and person-centered environment
Qualifications
- Active Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license/certification in the State of Florida
- Completion of an approved CNA or Home Health Aide training program meeting state and federal requirements
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in home health, long-term care, or group home settings preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Compassionate, dependable, and team-oriented approach to resident care
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather
- Ability to lift, move, push, or pull 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation
- Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and strong attention to detail
- Commitment to delivering exceptional care and supporting resident independence
