General Job Information
Job Summary
This position is located in the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS), Health Services Administration (HSA). Medical Services Department. DYRS'' mission is to improve public safety and provide court-involved youth the opportunity to become more productive citizens by building on the strengths of youth and their families in the least restrictive, most home-like environment consistent with public safety. Emphasis will be placed on best practices for interacting with youth, via short-term basic programming for youth in temporary short- term detention; or a treatment-oriented milieu for youth in longer-term custody depending on the legal status of the youth and based on the principles of Positive Youth Development.
HSA is responsible for the design, development, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of a 24-hour comprehensive continuum of quality adolescent medical and behavioral health care services and support, including screening/assessment, early detection and prevention services, treatment, counseling, dental and vision services for detained and committed youth in the agency''s care and custody.
HSA also coordinates and links with community-based health care providers with the capabilities and capacity to meet the ongoing medical and behavioral health needs of youth upon their release from DYRS secure care.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides basic nursing care under the supervision of licensed nursing personnel, including taking and recording vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, and weight. Assists with routine health screenings (e.g., vision, hearing) and performs Tuberculosis (TB) skin testing as directed by licensed staff. Prepares residents for medical appointments and specialty referrals; assists with scheduling, documentation, and follow-up as directed.
In addition, the incumbent will maintain a clean, safe, and health-promoting environment in accordance with OSHA, infection control, and facility guidelines. Assists licensed staff in responding to medical emergencies involving youth, staff, or visitors, in accordance with the Emergency Response Policy. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education
Successful completion of a 2-year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position.

Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.
Licenses and Certifications
Current, active, full, and unrestricted license by the District of Columbia as a Certified Nurse Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant, and proof of completion of a basic medical or nursing assistant program.
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
Work Environment
The work is performed in the health clinic and/or residential living units on other locations as assigned. Facilities are located at the New Beginnings Youth Development Center and the Youth Services Center.

Tour of Duty: Monday through Friday, 10 am- 6:30 pm with every other weekend scheduled for 12pm- 8:30pm

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is a union position covered by Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and may require the payment of an agency service fee through direct payroll deductions.
Duration of Appointment: Career Services-Regular Appointment.
Position Designation:
The incumbent in this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel regulations, Suitability. This position has been designated as a safety-sensitive position.
Residency Preference:
When claiming residency preference, you are required, and must agree in writing, to maintain bona fide District residency for a period of seven (7) consecutive years from the effective date of employment. You will be required to present documents (proofs) to show District residency and failure to maintain bona-fide District residency for the seven-year (7-year) period will result in forfeiture of employment.
