Major Responsibilities:

The Occupational Therapy Assistant, or Physical Therapist Assistant works under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist to provide therapeutic interventions for children with physical, developmental, sensory, neuromuscular, or orthopedic conditions.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Implement treatment plans and intervention strategies as directed by the supervising Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist.
  • Assist children with therapeutic exercises/activities, mobility, classroom routines/activities, safe school access, and sensory processing accommodations.
  • Monitor and document treatment sessions, students' responses and progress during treatment sessions, accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate and communicate with the multidisciplinary team (including Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech/Language Pathologists, Educators, Special Educators, paraprofessionals, etc.) to ensure comprehensive care and schedule adjustments.
  • Ensure a clean, safe, supportive, and engaging therapy environment.
  • Complete insurance documentation, as appropriate.
  • Maintain and update their caseload and schedule, and additional paperwork requirements throughout the school year.
  • Review and be familiar with students' IEPs, goals/objectives, accommodations/modifications, etc.
  • Willingness to learn IEP software for access to students' relevant information.
  • Stay current with best practices, and participate in ongoing professional development.

Work Environment:

The OTA/PTA will work across district schools, requiring travel between buildings. The position involves some lifting of equipment and/or individuals as necessary for therapy activities, or emergency purposes. Physical stamina and exertion to carry out therapy sessions and techniques, including activities such as standing, bending, kneeling, and demonstrating exercises.

Qualifications include:

Licensure/Certification

  • Current Massachusetts State licensure to practice as an Occupational Therapy Assistant, or Physical Therapist Assistant

Experience

  • Experience working with children, especially in pediatric settings (e.g., schools, clinics, hospitals, etc.), is preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Willingness to learn understanding and follow special education laws and regulations, including IDEA and Section 504
  • Strong communication, organizational, and documentation skills
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent time-management skills
  • Ability to be flexible to frequently changing schedule
  • Capacity to work with a team of professionals
  • Knowledge of child/adolescent physical/motor development, sensory integration techniques, and therapeutic approaches for pediatric care is essential.
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn about specific pediatric diagnoses/disabilities (e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Developmental Delay, Down's Syndrome, Neurological/Orthopedic conditions, etc.)
