    Job Description

    • Provides leadership to the physics section and oversees the medical physics services at The Stamford Hospital. Serves as Management's primary resource for ensuring safe use of radiation throughout the hospital system.
    • Designs/implements quality assurance programs in compliance with state and federal requirements. Ensures these programs are in general agreement with the recommendations of appropriate bodies,
    • Plan, evaluate, and budget for new technology to assure delivery of continuously improving quality of care and to guarantee adequate preparation for future services of Stamford Health Systems.
    • Participate in the acquisition and installation of ionizing radiation equipment for Stamford Health Systems, to include room plans and radiation shielding according to NRC and state regulations.
    • Ensures Radiology and nuclear imaging equipment is calibrated per regulatory requirement. Also, will evaluate new equipment (using the manufacturer's assistance) for acceptance testing upon installation.
    • Interfaces and communicates with relevant certifying and regulatory bodies, as needed.
    • Measure/assess radiation doses from diagnostic procedures to produce quality exams while keeping doses as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) for the examinees.
    • Assists Medical and Service Line Directors in the review, development and implementation of new procedures or programs to improve quality of care in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.
    • Supports radiation safety education throughout the hospital system and will meet with patient &/or families as requested to address questions of medical radiation exposure.
    • As the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) then must meet the NRC (or state) criteria of a radiation safety officer, and conducts:

    e.g., ACR, AAPM, FDA, NRC.

    • Quarterly reviews of nuclear imaging quality assurance documents.
    • Annual oversight of radiation safety in-service programs for radiation and non-radiation workers in Stamford Health.
    • Ensures the radiation safety of patients, staff and physicians as well as the hospital

    compliance with state and federal regulations.

    • Oversees equipment surveys including ACR Accreditation testing of Nuclear Medicine cameras, MRI, CT, Ultrasound, and mammography units according to state and federal regulations.
    • Completes and submits state registration compliance paperwork within required timeline.
    • Oversees radiation dosimeter use, exposure review and compliance.
    • Performs an annual ALARA review for the licensed activities.
    • Participation in Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) meetings.
    • Acts as primary resource for ensuring the safe use of radiation throughout the hospital system.
    • Designs and implements a radiation safety program for radiation healthcare students

    and radiology staff as required by state and federal mandates.

    • If not the RSO, then: In conjunction with the Radiation Safety Officer, drafts radioactive material license applications, renewals and amendments. Also, drafts responses and other communications on radiation safety to regulatory agencies. Oversees the monitoring of staff and patients for radiation exposure, and, investigates unusual exposure as necessary. Continually reviews the Radiation Safety program to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and the ALARA philosophy, making recommendations to Administration and the Radiation Safety Committee as needed.

    QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

    Minimum requirements master's degree in medical physics or related field and board certification in Therapeutic Radiological Physics or Radiological physics by the American Board of Radiology, American Board of Medical Physics, Canadian College of Physicist in Medicine, or, the Health Physics Society with Medical Health Physics specialty. Board certification in Diagnostic Radiology physics and/or Nuclear Medicine physics preferred.

    Minimum 10 years' experience in clinical/medical radiation physics required, including federal, state and accrediting body (TJC, DPH) compliance for the institution.

    Significant portions of daily assignments involve application of manual skills requiring motor coordination in combination with finger dexterity. (e.g., typing, machine operations, administration of routine treatments, injections, etc. or use of hand and/or power tools in various crafts and trades.

    Significant portions of daily assignments involve prolonged standing, transporting material, equipment, patients, or, lifting, moving, or carrying heavy loads (over 30 pounds) for intermittent periods throughout the day.

    Significant portions of daily assignments involve exposure to dirt, odors, noise, or include patient care responsibilities with exposure to human waste, body fluids and similar elements. Working surfaces may be unlevel, slippery or unstable.
