Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

  • The selected candidate will create and organize training programs for Guardians ad Litem and Court Appointed Special Advocates in child abuse and neglect cases and for other child protection legal professionals.
  • The candidate will also serve as a court liaison in selected counties.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 1 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications

  • Strongly prefer experience in the South Carolina family court system, curriculum development, and training.
  • Degree to be in a related field.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Working knowledge of state and federal laws related to child welfare and familiarity with DSS policy and procedures. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Ability to establish effective working relationships with judges, lawyers, court personnel, including clerks of court and their staff, and agency staff. Must have technological skills sufficient to enter case history information into a data tracking system. Ability to read, understand, and create (when necessary) basic statistical reports related to child welfare data.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of the family court process in child protection cases.Must be familiar with responsibilities of guardians ad litem and attorneys in child abuseand neglect cases. Must have working knowledge of state and federal laws relating tochild welfare and familiarity with

Job Duties

Job Duty

Develops and conducts ongoing training for volunteer guardians ad litem in support of the Court Improvement Program strategic plan. Prepares training materials for guardian ad litem program staff, assesses statewide guardian ad litem (GAL) training needs, and coordinates training for GAL program attorneys in collaboration with CLC staff and external trainers.

Provides coverage for circuit and county court liaisons during absences or periods of increased workload. Travels to assigned circuit and county court locations throughout the state to review case files, prepare court information sheets, identify issues that could delay court hearings, and observe court proceedings.

Supports implementation of the Court Improvement Program by preparing performance reports, compiling program information, assisting with program evaluation and reporting activities, and supporting other Court Improvement Program initiatives.
