Job Description

Job Description of Cisco Wireless LAN (WLAN) Subject Matter Expert

Position Summary
The Cisco Wireless LAN (WLAN) Subject Matter Expert (SME) will provide senior-level engineering, operations, troubleshooting, and technical leadership for a large-scale enterprise Cisco wireless network environment. The SME will be responsible for maintaining the reliability, security, performance, and availability of enterprise WLAN services and supporting the modernization and expansion of wireless capabilities across the organization. The position requires deep hands-on experience with Cisco enterprise wireless technologies and the ability to independently troubleshoot complex wireless, network, authentication, and connectivity issues across multiple infrastructure components.
Cisco Wireless Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is not simply a general network engineer with exposure to wireless technologies. The individual should be a hands-on Cisco WLAN engineer/SME capable of independently designing, configuring, troubleshooting, and supporting a large enterprise wireless environment, while also serving as a senior technical escalation point for complex WLAN, Cisco Client, authentication, RF, and network integration issues.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Design, configure, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise Cisco WLAN infrastructure, including Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers (WLCs), access points, and support network infrastructure.
  • Provide Tier 3 and Tier 4 engineering support for complex wireless connectivity, performance, roaming, authentication, and availability issues.
  • Configure and troubleshoot Cisco Client integration, including 802.1X authentication, RADIUS, certificate-based authentication, authorization policies, and network access control.
  • Support Cisco Catalyst Center for wireless assurance, monitoring, configuration management, troubleshooting, and network visibility.
  • Perform wireless network design and optimization, including RF analysis, channel planning, power optimization, coverage analysis, capacity planning, and interference mitigation.
  • Analyze wireless performance using controller telemetry, packet captures, spectrum/RF data, logs, and network monitoring tools.
  • Troubleshoot end-to-end connectivity across wireless, switching, routing, DHCP, DNS, authentication, firewall, and other supporting enterprise services.
  • Support high-availability and resilient WLAN architectures and participate in troubleshooting major incidents and service outages.
  • Develop and execute network changes, upgrades, code updates, hardware refreshes, and wireless infrastructure modernization activities.
  • Evaluate new Cisco wireless technologies, software releases, security capabilities, and architectural improvements.
  • Develop implementation plans, test plans, rollback procedures, technical documentation, diagrams, standard operating procedures, and root cause analyses.
  • Work closely with cybersecurity, network engineering, operations, application, and infrastructure teams to resolve cross-functional issues.
  • Provide technical guidance and knowledge transfer to government engineers and other WLAN support personnel.

Required Technical Qualifications
The candidate should demonstrate advanced hands-on experience with:
  • Cisco enterprise wireless networking in large, distributed environments.
  • Cisco Catalyst 9800 Series Wireless Controllers or comparable enterprise Cisco WLC platforms.
  • Cisco enterprise wireless access points and WLAN architectures.
  • Cisco Identity Services Engine (Client).
  • 802.1X, RADIUS, EAP authentication methods, PKI/certificate-based authentication, and Network Access Control (NAC).
  • Cisco Catalyst Center, including Assurance and wireless monitoring/troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Enterprise Wi-Fi standards, including Wi-Fi 6/6E and associated with 802.11 technologies.
  • RF fundamentals, wireless surveys, interference analysis, channel utilization, roaming, and capacity planning.
  • WLAN security technologies, including WPA2/WPA3 Enterprise.
  • VLANs, trunking, switching, routing, DHCP, DNS, QoS, ACLs, and other network services supporting WLAN environments.
  • Packet-level troubleshooting using tools such as Wireshark and Cisco diagnostic capabilities.
  • High-availability, redundancy, and disaster recovery concepts for enterprise WLAN services.
  • Network monitoring, performance analysis, incident troubleshooting, and root cause analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting wireless services within a large federal government or similarly complex enterprise environment.
  • Experience supporting geographically distributed networks with thousands of users and wireless access points.
  • Experience with Cisco Software-Defined Access (SDA), TrustSec, Security Group Tags (SGTs), and network segmentation.
  • Experience integrating wireless infrastructure with enterprise security architectures.
  • Experience with IPv6 and dual-stack enterprise network environments.
  • Experience with network automation and configuration management tools such as Ansible and APIs.
  • Experience developing wireless architecture standards, engineering documentation, and lifecycle/modernization recommendations.
  • Cisco professional or expert-level certifications such as CCNP Enterprise/Wireless or CCIE Enterprise Wireless are highly desirable.
