Civil Engineer – Transportation Construction Position Overview
A growing civil engineering firm is seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to join its transportation construction team in Michigan. This position will oversee highway, roadway, and bridge reconstruction projects while managing field staff, project documentation, budgets, contractor compliance, and client communication.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Michigan-licensed Professional Engineer with significant MDOT and heavy civil construction experience who is ready to take on greater project and team leadership responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and oversee highway, roadway, and bridge rehabilitation and reconstruction projects.
Administer construction contracts and ensure contractor compliance with plans, specifications, and contract documents.
Lead pre-construction, progress, HMA/concrete pre-production, and other project meetings.
Supervise and mentor engineers, inspectors, and technicians supporting field operations.
Manage construction documentation, pay estimates, work orders, contract modifications, and project close-out activities.
Review field and office documentation for accuracy and contractual compliance.
Interpret construction plans, specifications, and contract documents to resolve project challenges.
Coordinate with contractors, clients, municipalities, agencies, and project stakeholders.
Review and respond to contractor correspondence, disputes, and claims.
Monitor project schedules, staffing requirements, and budgets.
Provide clients with regular project updates and recommendations.
Manage internal budgets associated with professional services contracts.
Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior staff.
Assist with client development and future project opportunities.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
Professional Engineer (PE) license in Michigan required.
10+ years of civil engineering and construction experience.
Strong background in MDOT, heavy highway, roadway, and/or bridge construction.
Previous experience serving as a Project Engineer, Assistant Project Engineer, Construction Engineer, or similar role on transportation construction projects.
Thorough understanding of transportation projects from design through final construction and close-out.
Experience managing construction projects ranging from local roadway improvements to major highway, freeway, and structural projects.
Strong project management, budgeting, documentation, and contract administration skills.
Ability to lead field teams and mentor engineers and technicians.
Strong communication, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills.
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as required.
