Discharge Planning: Meeting with social workers to ensure safe, timely patient exits- with special focus on Length of Stay and documentation improvement to improve the Case Mix Index
Human Resources & Team Leadership
Staff Scheduling: Managing 24/7 rotations, including call-outs and holiday coverage.
Conflict Resolution: Mediating disputes between medical staff or between staff and families.
Skill Development: Identifying training gaps and organizing "in-service" education sessions.
Performance Tracking: Setting annual goals and conducting formal reviews for nurses and techs.
Quality, Safety, & Compliance
Audit Readiness: Ensuring the unit is always prepared for surprise Joint Commission inspections
Incident Investigation: Reviewing "near misses" or patient falls to create prevention plans.
Infection Control: Monitoring strict adherence to hand-hygiene and sterile procedure protocols.
Patient Experience: Reviewing HCAHPS scores and addressing patient complaints directly.
Financial & Strategic Management
Budget Variance: Explaining why the department went over or under budget each month.
Supply Chain: Approving high-cost medical equipment orders and monitoring waste.
Strategic Growth: Helping the Department Chair plan for new service lines or unit expansions.
Labor Costs: Monitoring "overtime" usage and balancing the use of expensive travel nurses.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration , Masters preferred
Experience: Typically 3–5 years of clinical experience, often in a hospital or leadership role.
Certifications: Valuable credentials include Certified Clinical Manager (CCM) or Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM)- preferred
Technical Proficiency: Expert knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and healthcare management software.
