Shawnee Health is seeking a CMA or LPN to add to the Carbondale Terrier Care team. This position will work a 9 month school schedule. This position reports directly to the Assistant Nurse Manager.
 
Essential Job Functions:
  1. Duties
  • Prepares the exam rooms for the patient by setting up any needed equipment and maintains a clean, organized, efficient and confidential work area.
  • Greets the patient, escorts the patient to the exam room, and verifies patient name and date of birth.
  • Obtains vital signs, height and weight, allergies, completes medication reconciliation, review of systems, updates immunizations and documents relevant information by following appropriate EHR work flow for the visit type and alerts provider to any concerns.
  • Reviews patient social, family and medical health history, documenting any changes in the patient medical record.
  • Updates quality measures
  • Completes necessary screenings as required and makes appropriate referrals to Case Management or Behavioral Services as appropriate.
  • Prepares patient for exam.
  • Performs venipuncture and processes labs as appropriate
  • Performs quality assurance for all lab procedures, daily maintenance, temperature controls for all patient point-of-care testing.
  • Performs and assists provider with any procedures or treatments.
  • Performs any lab tests, screening procedures, administers medications or immunizations per the provider orders or per standing orders and documents in the patient medical record.
  • Ensures all documentation is complete, timely and accurate following clinic policies and procedures and EHR workflows. 
  • Follows sterile technique and aseptic technique as appropriate.
  • Provides education for patient on such topics as tobacco cessation, weight management, physical activity, chronic diseases and other health topics and documents appropriately. 
  • Manages electronic tasking and completes tasks according to Shawnee’s designated timeframes. 
  • Communicates effectively with patient by telephone to relay advice or instructions from the provider. 
  • Maintains all equipment in accordance with manufacturer directions and clinical policies in regard to infection control.
  • Communicate with supervisor and other team members during the work day to meet the needs of the patients.
  • Follows all clinic policies and procedures for medication and immunization administration, sign out, reconciliation and inventory management. 
  • Utilizes ICARE (Illinois Comprehensive Automated Immunization Registry Exchange) to maintain an immunization registry for SH patients. 
  • Selects appropriate inventory for immunizations per requirements.
  • Participates in huddles and other meetings as required. 
  • Required to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings, weekends, and early morning hours.
  • Required to work special outreach events such as but not limited to school registration, orientation, vaccine clinics, other school events, etc.
  • Reliable transportation on the job is mandatory
  • May be temporarily assigned or permanently re-assigned to other school based work locations at Shawnee Health.

  • Assists in educating and acts as a resource to clinical and non-clinical departments.
  • Assists with the identification and reporting of potential quality and risk management issues.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities, as needed.
  • Responsible to refer any customer service calls that are not resolved in a timely manner to appropriate management staff for timely resolution.
  • Participates in meetings as required.
  • Acts as a liaison between Shawnee Health and the local health departments.
  • Participates in training and mentoring new hires, students and Medical Assistant apprentices as required.
 
  1. Patient Registration Specialist (PRS) Duties
 
  • Responsible for scheduling and documenting all patient interactions in the appropriate location within the practice management/EHR systems.
  • Utilizes practice management system to schedule appointments according to established protocols and effectively schedules return appointments according to established protocols
  • Promptly and professionally answers, screens, and processes medical service requests and telephone inquiries with strict adherence to confidentiality policies.
  • Greets the patient, and verifies patient name and date of birth. Accurately and efficiently checks patients in; checking insurance/Medicaid eligibility, collecting copays and updating title in the alert area of the patient’s electronic medical record.
  • Collects and enters patient intake information into the appropriate area of the practice manage system with accurate information.
  • Completes school based health center (SBHC) consents as required
  • Completes Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) required screenings based on age e.g. Bright Futures, Transition pediatric to adult care, vision screening, school physicals and sports physicals
  • Has a full understanding of confidential visits and the consents related to confidential visits
  • Updates contact information regularly including confidential phone number, if needed
  • Updates chart photos of patients when needed
  • Ability to balance money drawers/bank deposits daily in accordance with Shawnee Health policies
  • Ability to complete sliding fee application (SFA) proficiently and pass testing for SFA application
  • Utilizes ICARE (Illinois Comprehensive Automated Immunization Registry Exchange) along with Infinite Campus, the school’s cloud-based program, to maintain an immunization registry for SH patients
Attendance
Employee must maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with Shawnee Health policies and procedures.  Employee must to report to work and be on time for each scheduled shift unless scheduled absent or on approved leave in accordance with federal and/or state law.  Regular employee attendance is essential to the efficient operation of Shawnee Health and is an essential component of employee’s job duties.
Employee will work in accordance with the 9 month school schedule.  Employee will be given the option to work hours during the 3 months that the school based clinic is closed at other Shawnee Health  locations.
Process Improvement
Employee will promote a culture of continuous improvement by actively participating in team based improvement events that will support SH process improvement goals and initiatives.
Compliance with Policies/Procedures
Employee will maintain compliance with Shawnee Health policies, procedures, and on-going education requirements.  Employee will maintain compliance with program specific standards and regulations.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Health & Safety
Employee will comply with all standard operation procedures of Shawnee Health regarding employee health and safety, including but not limited to OSHA regulations (Blood borne Pathogen Standard and Hazardous Communication Rules), Environmental Protection Act (EPA) regulations governing waste disposal, and completion of unusual occurrence reports.
 
  1. Physical Requirements:
Position requires sitting for prolonged periods of time, frequent walking and standing.

  1. Licenses & Certifications:
Must have a valid Illinois driver’s license and auto liability insurance on personal vehicles.
               BLS/CPR Certification must be maintained. Knowledge of basic first aid is required.
                Must have a valid certification to practice as a Certified Medical Assistant or LPN license with the state of Illinois
