TITLE: Per Diem CMA/RMA

Job Description:

The role of a CMA/RMA within the BPSD is to attend field trips and afterschool activities when the school nurse is unable to attend, or there is no substitute nurse available. The CMA/RMA will be under the supervision of the School Nurse, administering appropriate medications and reporting any (medical) concerns directly to the nurse. The CMA/RMA position within the district is a per-diem position and will be compensated as a per-diem position only.

Responsibilities will include:

• Report directly to the School Nurse responsible for the student group or class attending the event.
• Successful completion of the Medication Administration for Unlicensed Assistive Personnel offered by BU Shields online training program. Must be completed after date of hire but prior to attending any field trips or events, or administering any medications
• Able to demonstrate knowledge and ability to safely and correctly administer single dose, scheduled medications to students following the 5-R's of administration (Right Patient, Right Medication, Right Dose, Right Time, Right Route)
• Correctly document administration of medication according to the 5-R's; and report any concerns directly to the School Nurse.
• Maintain strict confidentiality according to HIPPA and FERPA guidelines
• Demonstrate professionalism in all communications, interactions and skills when working with students, faculty, parent chaperones or site personnel.
• May be required to take and report vital signs for any student or adult member of the group, reporting the results directly back to school nurse
• Ride to and from all events with the group, on the transportation that is provided.
• Safely secure all medication, student/parent information and documentation with you, at all times. A backpack or other type of bag will be provided to you, from the school nurse, containing supplies, medications, necessary documentation, and student information before leaving the school on the day of the event. The bag and its remaining contents must be returned to the nurse when the group returns to the school.
• Treat/clean minor cuts and abrasions as needed; and report all injuries to the school nurse. The Nurse will notify a parent/guardian when needed.
• Notify the school nurse if student reports feeling unwell, vomits, or develops a fever.
• In the event of a medical emergency, stay with the student and call 911. CMA/RMA or BPSD staff member can notify the school nurse and should maintain contact so that the nurse can, in turn, notify the parent/guardian. A medical emergency is any sudden event that puts a person at risk for permanent loss of body function or death. Possible medical emergencies include seizures when no rescue medication is available, head injuries or any loss of consciousness, uncontrolled bleeding, suspected fracture, unresponsive hypoglycemia, anaphylaxis or severe allergic reactions, severe asthma that is not responding to treatment with rescue medication/inhaler.
• If the student is transported to a medical facility, the CMA/RMA is to remain with the school group and a BPSD staff member will accompany the student to the medical facility, in the ambulance. That staff person will remain with the student until the parent/guardian arrives at the facility, or another BPSD staff member relieves them.

Application Requirements:

• Minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent
• Completion of an accredited medical assistant program
• Must hold a current Massachusetts Medical Assistant certification (CMA); national registration preferred (RMA)
• Minimum of 2-3 years experience
• Current Health Care Provider CPR certification
• Able to provide copies or CPR certification, diploma from an accredited medical assistant program, legal ID and social security card
• Clear CORI background check
• Knowledge of development stages and ability to provide age appropriate communication, interactions and professional skills
• Must possess good organizational skills
• Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology
• Personal cell phone that can be used to communicate directly with the School Nurse or 911.

Salary Range: 110-120.00 per day
