You step onto the shop floor, review a complex blueprint for a geotechnical component, and decide whether to hand-write G-code or generate toolpaths in CAM. You select fixtures and tooling, dial in offsets, cut the first piece from alloy steel, then verify every critical dimension. When something isn’t cutting as planned, you troubleshoot, refine feeds and speeds, and get back to spec. Between runs, you coach an operator on setup best practices and keep meticulous records so quality is never in doubt.
What you’ll do
Program CNC equipment with G-code and/or CAM to manufacture complex, precise parts for drilling and geotechnical applications
Own complex setups, including fixturing, tooling selection, and establishing accurate work/tool offsets
Machine close-tolerance components from steel, aluminum, and specialty alloys
Inspect finished work to blueprint requirements and verify dimensional accuracy
Diagnose machining issues and implement corrective actions for quality and efficiency
Mentor CNC Operators and Assistants to elevate team capability
Maintain complete and accurate production and inspection documentation
What you bring
Required
High school diploma or GED
3+ years of hands-on CNC machining experience
Strong G-code programming proficiency
Proven ability to hold tight tolerances (±0.001")
Preferred
Associate degree in Manufacturing Technology
Experience with CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360)
Background machining drill rods or downhole tools
Physical demands & work environment
Prolonged standing, lifting up to 50 lbs, and regular exposure to cutting fluids, metal dust, and noise. Required PPE at all times.
