Description of Job

The Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) is accepting applications for a pool of qualified individuals interested in seasonal coaching opportunities throughout the school year.

Coaching assignments may become available at the middle school and high school levels in a variety of athletic and student activity programs. Assignments may include both Head Coach and Assistant Coach opportunities.

Current programs may include:

  • Volleyball (Middle School and High School)
  • Goalball
  • Flag Football
  • Special Olympics Sports
  • Academic Bowl
  • Additional programs as assigned

Applicants may indicate the sport(s) and coaching assignment(s) for which they wish to be considered.

Coaches play an important role in fostering student growth by promoting teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, academic success, inclusion, and personal responsibility. CSDB coaches provide a safe, supportive, and engaging environment while serving Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind, Visually Impaired, DeafBlind, and other diverse learners. This language aligns well with the common themes across the position descriptions.

Typical Duties

Selected candidates may perform some or all of the following duties depending on the assigned coaching position:

  • Plan, organize, and conduct practices and competitions.
  • Teach sport-specific or activity-specific skills, techniques, and strategies.
  • Promote teamwork, leadership, discipline, inclusion, and sportsmanship.
  • Supervise students during practices, competitions, travel, and other school-sponsored activities.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Monitor student participation, attendance, conduct, and eligibility.
  • Maintain equipment, uniforms, facilities, and program records.
  • Support student safety and respond appropriately to emergencies and injuries.
  • Ensure compliance with CSDB policies and all applicable governing rules, including CHSAA, NFHS, Special Olympics, or other program requirements.
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, clinics, and professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or school administration.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience participating in, coaching, teaching, officiating, or supporting athletic or academic enrichment programs.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and mentor school-aged students.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work evenings and travel as required.
  • Ability to successfully complete all required pre-employment screenings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous coaching experience.
  • Experience working with Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind, Visually Impaired, DeafBlind, or students with disabilities.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency.
  • Knowledge of CHSAA, NFHS, Special Olympics, or other applicable governing organizations.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

Conditions of Employment

  • Seasonal, part-time employment.
  • Work schedules vary by assigned program and season.
  • Evening practices and competitions are required.
  • Some assignments require travel.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation.
  • First Aid and CPR certification required before or shortly after hire depending on assignment.
  • Additional certifications or coaching registrations may be required based on the assigned program (e.g., CHSAA, NFHS, Special Olympics).
