Job Description – COBOL Developer

Position: COBOL Developer

Location: Boston, MA


Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced COBOL Developer to support the development, enhancement, maintenance, and modernization of enterprise mainframe applications. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, and VSAM, along with expertise in production support, debugging, and system integration. The candidate will work closely with business analysts, QA teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, enhance, and maintain COBOL-based mainframe applications.
  • Analyze business requirements and convert them into technical solutions.
  • Develop and modify COBOL programs, JCL, CICS transactions, and DB2 queries.
  • Perform code reviews, unit testing, integration testing, and production deployments.
  • Troubleshoot application issues, identify root causes, and implement fixes.
  • Support batch processing, job scheduling, and production incidents.
  • Optimize existing applications for performance and maintainability.
  • Work with VSAM files, DB2 databases, and file transfer processes.
  • Collaborate with business users, QA teams, and project managers throughout the SDLC.
  • Prepare technical documentation and maintain development standards.
  • Participate in application modernization and migration initiatives where applicable.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in COBOL development.
  • Strong programming experience with COBOL on IBM Mainframe.
  • Experience with:
    • COBOL
    • JCL
    • CICS
    • DB2
    • VSAM
    • TSO/ISPF
    • IBM Mainframe environments
  • Knowledge of batch processing and production support.
  • Experience with debugging, performance tuning, and problem resolution.
  • Familiarity with SDLC, Agile, or Waterfall methodologies.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with IMS DB/DC.
  • Knowledge of Easytrieve, REXX, or SyncSort.
  • Exposure to DevOps tools and automated deployment processes for mainframe applications.
  • Experience with banking, financial services, insurance, or government projects.
  • Mainframe modernization experience is a plus.
