collision estimator (also called an auto body estimator) is a professional who assesses vehicle damage after accidents and provides accurate repair cost estimates for customers and insurance companies. They act as a liaison between customers, repair shops, and insurers, ensuring repairs are completed efficiently, safely, and within budget. 

Core Job Roles

  • Damage Assessment: Inspect vehicles to evaluate structural, body, mechanical, electrical, and interior damage.

  • Repair Estimation: Use specialized software (e.g., CCC One, Audatex, Mitchell) and manual calculations to determine labor, parts, and material costs.

  • Report Preparation: Document inspection findings, repair plans, and cost breakdowns for insurance claims and internal records.

  • Insurance Coordination: Work with adjusters to submit estimates, negotiate approvals, and ensure compliance with insurance guidelines.

  • Customer Communication: Explain repair options, costs, timelines, and procedures; address customer concerns and preferences .

  • Repair Planning: Coordinate with technicians and parts departments to schedule repairs and ensure component availability.

  • Quality Assurance: Follow up on repairs to verify work meets safety and quality standards before returning the vehicle.
