Commercial Roofing Superintendent
Location: San Francisco Bay Area / Silicon Valley, CA
Position Type: Full-Time
Position Summary
A growing commercial roofing contractor is seeking an experienced Roofing Superintendent to oversee field operations for commercial, industrial, and multi-family roofing projects throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
This position is responsible for supervising field crews, coordinating project execution, maintaining quality standards, enforcing job-site safety, and ensuring projects are completed on schedule and within budget. The ideal candidate is a hands-on field leader with broad technical knowledge of commercial roofing systems and an established network of skilled roofing professionals and subcontractors.
Key Responsibilities
Field Leadership & Workforce Management
- Direct the day-to-day activities of roofing crews, foremen, and subcontractors across multiple active projects.
- Utilize existing industry relationships to recruit, coordinate, and retain qualified field personnel.
- Assign manpower based on project schedules, production requirements, and workforce availability.
- Coach and mentor field personnel while maintaining productivity, accountability, and high workmanship standards.
- Coordinate staffing needs to maximize efficiency while minimizing downtime and unnecessary labor costs.
Project Execution & Quality Assurance
- Oversee installation activities for a wide range of commercial and multi-family roofing systems, including:
- TPO
- PVC
- EPDM
- Built-Up Roofing (BUR)
- Modified Bitumen
- Fluid-Applied Roofing Systems
- Metal Roofing
- Asphalt Shingle and Tile Roofing
- Perform routine job-site inspections throughout each phase of construction.
- Verify that installations comply with manufacturer specifications, contract documents, applicable building codes, and warranty requirements.
- Identify installation issues early and implement practical field solutions to maintain project quality and schedule.
- Review flashing details, penetrations, edge conditions, drainage, and final punch-list items prior to project completion.
Safety Leadership
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture on every project.
- Ensure compliance with Cal/OSHA regulations, company safety policies, fall protection requirements, PPE standards, and heat illness prevention procedures.
- Conduct routine job-site safety inspections and daily or weekly toolbox talks.
- Investigate incidents, document findings, and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Maintain accurate safety documentation and field reports.
Scheduling & Site Coordination
- Coordinate material deliveries, equipment scheduling, crane lifts, and site logistics to support uninterrupted production.
- Communicate regularly with project managers regarding manpower, schedules, production progress, and field challenges.
- Maintain organized, clean, and professional job sites throughout each project.
- Serve as the primary field representative when interacting with customers, property managers, facility personnel, consultants, inspectors, and other project stakeholders.
Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum of five years of experience as a Commercial Roofing Superintendent, General Foreman, or similar field leadership role.
- Demonstrated success supervising commercial, industrial, and multi-family roofing projects from mobilization through completion.
- Experience managing multiple projects and coordinating numerous field crews simultaneously is preferred.
Technical Knowledge
Strong working knowledge of:
- Single-ply roofing systems (TPO, PVC, EPDM)
- Built-Up Roofing (BUR)
- Modified Bitumen
- Fluid-Applied Roofing Systems
- Architectural and structural sheet metal
- Asphalt shingles
- Concrete and clay tile roofing
- Manufacturer installation standards and warranty requirements
Leadership Skills
- Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop roofing crews.
- Strong organizational and scheduling abilities.
- Excellent communication and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to make sound field decisions in fast-paced environments.
Certifications & Requirements
- OSHA 30 Certification required.
- CPR and First Aid Certification preferred.
- Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA regulations and construction safety best practices.
- Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills strongly preferred to effectively supervise diverse field personnel and subcontractors.
- Valid California driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Comfortable using tablets, smartphones, and mobile applications for daily reports, production tracking, and communication.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation
- Competitive base salary ranging from $95,000 to $125,000, based on experience, technical expertise, leadership ability, and local industry relationships.
