A Construction Supervisor to Supervise Our Self-Help Builders

JOB SUMMARY

This is a Full-Time 32 hour per week position, while maintaining a 40 hour pay equivalent. The schedule is Saturday through Wednesday or Wednesday through Sunday (dependent on project).

PURPOSE

CHIP’s Self-HelpHousing Programdevelops safe, sustainable,andaffordableownership housing by utilizingthemutualself-helpmethodofhouseconstructionthroughout CHIP’s servicearea.

Job Functions

Essential Responsibilities:

·        The Self-Help ConstructionSupervisoris primarily responsible foreffectivelytraining and supervising ourself-helpbuildersintheconstructionof high-quality, sustainable, safe, affordablehousing.

·        The Construction Supervisor leads, trains,andempowersself-helpparticipants tolearnconstructionskillsandassistin thebuilding ofqualityhomes andcommunities.

·        Assuremaximumefficiency andsafetyofworkforce andmaterials. The workforce includes both theself-helpbuilders andthesubcontractors.

Essential Duties:

·        Overseetoolusage,inventory,andsafework conditions.

·        Train andsuperviseself-helpbuilders tosuccessfullycarry outconstructiontasks.

·        Organizework crews. Encouragecooperationandefficiency.

·        Perform construction work to ensure our self-help builders have sufficient work ahead of them.

·        Maintainrecordsandpaperworkas required.

·        Supervise the work of subcontractors andreportproblemsordeficiencies to the siteforeman.

·        Consistentlyprofessionally represent CHIP,consistentwith CHIP’s mission andvalues.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

·        Haveprofessionalbuilding skills withjourneyman orequivalentcarpentryskills.

·        Havetheability toteach necessary construction skills tounskilled self-helpparticipants.

·        Beavailabletowork weekends.

·        Becommitted totheconcept of mutualSelf-Helphousingforlow-incomefamilies.

·        BilingualEnglish/Spanish orEnglish/HmongPreferred.

·        Havestrongpeople skills, andthepatience, tact,andabilitytomotivate self-help participantsanddeal withthepublic.

·        Bepreparedtocommute.CHIP builds within aseven-countyservicearea anda ConstructionSupervisormaybe assignedtoany one of thecurrentsites. Mileagereimbursement forconstruction staff perCHIPtravelpolicy. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

Must have a reliable vehicle, a current valid California Driver’s license, and be insurable under the criteria established by CHIP’s general liability carrier. Must provide current proof of insurance levels at the levels specified by the CHIP travel policy.

Actual salary will depend on the candidate’s qualifications, education, experience, skills, and internal equity. We typically hire within the lower half of the posted range to allow room for growth. The range listed does not include benefits such as paid time off, retirement, medical and life insurance, or mileage reimbursement.
