Position Summary

Werner Construction is seeking motivated students interested in gaining hands-on experience in construction surveying and field engineering. This paid, 10-week internship provides practical experience in construction layout, grade control, and surveying operations for asphalt, concrete, and heavy highway construction projects.

Interns will work alongside experienced surveyors and field personnel to develop an understanding of how construction plans are translated into accurate field measurements, layouts, and completed projects.

Internship Responsibilities

• Assist with construction staking, site layout, and grade control.

• Gain hands-on experience with GPS equipment, robotic total stations, and data collectors.

• Review and interpret construction plans, alignments, profiles, and cross sections.

• Assist with measuring and verifying elevations, slopes, offsets, and quantities.

• Support survey crews with equipment setup, field measurements, and layout verification.

• Maintain accurate field notes, survey records, and project documentation.

• Coordinate with surveyors, superintendents, and field crews to support daily construction activities.

• Develop practical surveying skills through progressively more independent assignments under supervision.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Technology, or a related field.

• Interest in construction surveying, field engineering, and heavy highway construction.

• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and problem-solving skills.

• Interest in learning surveying technology, equipment, and software.

• Ability to read and interpret technical information and construction plans.

• Strong communication and teamwork skills.

• Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel to project locations.

• Eagerness to learn and take on new responsibilities.

• Competitive Pay & Overtime: Competitive hourly wages with time-and-a-half overtime pay for hours worked over 40 per week.
