The University of New Mexico, Office of the University Controller, also known as Financial Services, located on Main Campus is responsible for all central accounting functions for the University.

It is the responsibility of Financial Services to ensure compliance with all financial policies, rules, and regulations adopted by the University or imposed by external agencies, state and federal audit requirements, and generally accepted accounting practices. Financial Services maintains the official financial records of the University.

Within Financial Services is the Contract & Grant Accounting (CGA) department which has an exciting opportunity for a Manager, Accounting.

Contract and Grant Accounting provides the University of New Mexico's research community with professional expertise and quality customer service in the management of external funding. CGA strives to provide guidance and support to ensure compliance with UNM policy, state law, federal regulations and agency terms and conditions of funding. What We're Seeking!

The ideal candidate is a proactive self-starter with a strong accounting background and sponsored projects experience. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in subrecipient monitoring, agency and governmental regulations, and final closing of sponsored projects. This individual will balance multiple priorities, complete projects on time, and maintain a keen eye for detail. Strong verbal and written communication skills, exceptional interpersonal skills, outstanding organizational abilities, and strong leadership abilities are essential for success in this role.

Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the day-to-day activities including ensuring compliance with university, state, and federal policies and regulations on restricted awards.
  • Supervise and manage personnel including work allocation, training, professional development, enforcement of internal processes and controls, and handling performance evaluations.
  • Oversee subrecipient monitoring including risk assessments and desk reviews.
  • Oversee the final closeout of restricted awards on a timely basis.
  • Participate in external and internal audits.
  • Assist in development, implementation, and maintenance of policies and processes involving restricted award monitoring.
  • Advise, consult, and meet as necessary with UNM departments, PIs, and with other UNM Core offices regarding compliance, internal controls, audit requests, special projects, and processes.

This position may qualify for a hybrid schedule based on performance post probation/trial period. While on probation or during trial period, the expectation is to be in the office and on-site Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm. On-Call in office presence may be required from supervisor and/or for meeting purposes.

Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate''s education, experience and qualifications.

Conditions of Employment Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor''s degree successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferences should be supported in application/resume.

  • Master's degree in Accounting or CPA/CMA Certification
  • Experience with research administration, FARS, and Uniform Guidance
  • Experience working with UNM financial programs such as MyReports and Banner
  • Effective time management skills to prioritize multiple ongoing work tasks to meet deadlines
  • Experience communicating effectively at different levels of organization, both verbally in-person and/or virtually as well as in writing
  • Effective research and analytical skills to investigate discrepancies or questions
  • Proficient in MS Excel to analyze/interpret financial data and prepare reports
  • Knowledge and understanding of University, Federal, State, and Agency policies and terms & conditions
