Description

Interim Payroll Tax Specialist – Remote
Job Type: Interim/Contract
Location: Fully Remote
Compensation: $40 per hour
Position Overview
A publicly traded healthcare organization is seeking an experienced Interim Payroll Tax Specialist to support payroll-tax auditing, reconciliation, and remediation during a transition from Workday to ADP.

The organization supports a diverse, multistate workforce that includes member services representatives, case managers, care coordinators, medical assistants, nurse practitioners, claims examiners, auditors, and corporate employees.

The ideal candidate has hands-on payroll-processing experience combined with strong multistate payroll-tax expertise. This role will focus primarily on identifying discrepancies, confirming that taxes are properly matched and allocated, and helping establish accurate data for the transition to ADP.
Key Responsibilities

  • Audit federal, state, and local payroll-tax calculations, allocations, and payments.

  • Identify payroll-tax discrepancies and determine their underlying causes.

  • Reconcile payroll-tax records between Workday, third-party tax systems, general ledger data, and agency records.

  • Review employer tax identification numbers, state registrations, agency accounts, and unemployment-insurance setups across multiple states.

  • Confirm that employee wages and taxes are assigned to the correct states and local jurisdictions.

  • Research and resolve missing, unmatched, or incorrectly allocated payroll-tax transactions.

  • Assist with payroll-tax cleanup and data validation ahead of the transition from Workday to ADP.

  • Review time-and-attendance information when needed to validate taxable wages and work locations.

  • Work with payroll, finance, HR, and external payroll-tax providers to resolve discrepancies.

  • Maintain clear audit documentation and support applicable SOX controls.

  • Track open tax issues through resolution and provide regular status updates.

  • Assist with payroll processing and other payroll-related activities as needed.
Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Payroll Tax Specialist, Payroll Analyst, Payroll Administrator, or similar payroll professional.

  • Hands-on experience processing payroll.

  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll-tax requirements.

  • Experience supporting multistate payroll and researching state-specific tax issues.

  • Experience auditing and reconciling payroll taxes.

  • Working knowledge of state employer identification numbers, unemployment-insurance accounts, and payroll-tax agency registrations.

  • Experience using Workday Payroll.

  • Strong Excel skills and the ability to analyze detailed payroll data.

  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple open issues in a fully remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ADP payroll-tax services or payroll-tax implementations.

  • Experience supporting a Workday-to-ADP transition.

  • Familiarity with third-party payroll-tax filing and settlement providers.

  • Experience working in a publicly traded or SOX-controlled environment.

  • Experience with payroll for healthcare, insurance, care-management, or software organizations.
What Success Looks Like
The successful candidate will quickly assess the current payroll-tax setup, identify state and jurisdictional discrepancies, reconcile outstanding issues, and help ensure accurate payroll-tax data and controls during the transition to ADP.
