Position Overview
A growing commercial real estate company is seeking a strong, hands-on Controller to lead and elevate its accounting and finance operations.
This is a high-impact leadership role for an experienced controller who can oversee a team, strengthen processes and controls, drive accountability, and ensure financial reporting meets the standards required by lenders, auditors, and ownership. The ideal candidate combines deep accounting expertise with strong management skills and a process-improvement mindset.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage a team of accounting professionals, including a Junior Controller and Property Accountants
Oversee the day-to-day accounting operations across a portfolio of commercial real estate assets
Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting
Review general ledger activity, reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, and financial statements
Establish and maintain strong internal controls, documentation standards, and accounting procedures
Drive process improvements, accountability, and operational efficiencies throughout the accounting department
Partner closely with ownership, the CFO, property management, and other departments to improve reporting accuracy and information flow
Support lender reporting, audits, tax packages, budgeting, forecasting, and special projects
Implement enhanced financial reporting standards to meet growing audit and lender requirements
Develop, mentor, and hold team members accountable for performance and deadlines
Ideal Candidate
5+ years of Controller-level leadership experience
Strong experience managing accounting teams and improving accounting operations
Commercial real estate accounting experience strongly preferred
Deep understanding of financial reporting, month-end close, reconciliations, and internal controls
Experience overseeing multiple entities, properties, or complex accounting structures
Strong leadership presence with the ability to drive accountability and elevate team performance
Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills
Advanced Excel skills and comfort working within accounting and property management systems
Experience with audits, lender reporting, and financial compliance requirements
Preferred Qualifications
Commercial real estate or property management accounting experience
Experience with CAM reconciliations, lease accounting, and property-level reporting
Public accounting background a plus
Experience with Yardi preferred
