Controls Systems Design Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY

The BMS/Controls Engineer will be responsible for the design of Facility/Building Management Systems (FMS/BMS) and data center controls for general and emergency lighting systems, switchgear, standby generators, MV and LV distribution, UPS systems and associated battery cabinets, fire protection systems, access control and CCTV systems with primary emphasis on Power Modules, IT Modules and Data Centers. The BMS/Controls Engineer will design to customer specifications and requirements and will support all Controls inquiries and business development activities through the course of the assigned project. The Engineer will provide general Controls configuration designs for Data Centers, Telecommunications Central Office, Switching Centers, Video Hub Offices, etc. and will work directly with the module integration facility to develop a detailed drawing package for the integration of all FMS/BMS systems. The Engineer will provide FMS/BMS riser diagrams, Input/Output tables, programming parameters for specific BMS software, Sequence of Operations for the data center operation, etc. This Individual will coordinate the testing of the facility FMS/BMS systems with Electrical, Architectural and Mechanical (Thermal) designs and participate in the Factory and Site Acceptance Testing and commissioning when required.

RESPONSIBILITES

• Serve as the Controls Engineer on assigned projects from pre-sales to final commissioning stage.
• Create designs which meet or exceed Vertiv quality requirements and fall within budgetary requirements.
• Design optimal FMS/BMS network architecture in compliance with the customer's requirements and specifications.
• Work with 3rd party suppliers to define and coordinate control and monitoring interfaces for their equipment, utilizing and coordinating local controllers, relays and components to accomplish the overall FMS/BMS/EPMS integration.
• Define and document interaction between electrical equipment, mechanical systems and 3rd party equipment, including required points, alarms, statuses, commands, interlocks and communication interfaces.
• Generation of bills of material, and modification of standard assemblies as required to satisfy the application.
• Familiarity with industry-standard communication protocols including Modbus TCP/RTU, SNMP, OPC and TCP/IP, as well as hardware requirements for RS-485, CAN, and Ethernet interfaces.
• Develop system integration architectures, network diagrams, wiring diagrams, points lists, cable schedules, equipment interface requirements, equipment layouts and sequences of operation (SOOs)
• Manage and Support contracted integration companies to provide a detailed Schematic Design(SD), Detail Design(DD) and Construction Drawing(CD) narrative for FMS/BMS design aspects of the solution
• Collaborate with other disciplines and external partners - General Contractors and field teams to develop construction document sets, installation details, installation manuals and Bills of Material associated with the Controls design.
• Work with Vertiv's business units, Business Partners and preferred vendors to specify the appropriate BMS and controls equipment, coordinate requirements, review and develop equipment and system testing procedures.
• Work with local agencies having jurisdiction to ensure compliance with federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes.
• Create, review and approve FMS/BMS product, cable and component submittals.
• Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to and during construction phases.
• Quality control during integration of FMS/BMS systems
• Support for all on site integration support
• Work with commissioning teams to properly test and validate installation, operation and performance of FMS/BMS systems.
• Travel to sites for site review and work with onsite field engineers, as well as provide engineering evaluations, FMS/BMS systems audits and start-up as needed.
• Offer creative, out of the box solutions to the customer.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or possess acceptable experience and subject knowledge
• Professional engineering (PE) License - optional
• Minimum 4 years of Controls Engineering experience
• Knowledge of FMS/BMS design concepts, installation, and use
• Knowledge of local, state, & federal codes governing the installation and use of FMS/BMS control requirements.
• Working knowledge in AutoDesk suite of Engineering software including AutoCAD and Revit
• Proven experience with Microsoft Office Applications
• Experience reading and interpreting modular construction drawings and equipment specifications
• Interpreting customer specification requirements.
• Have the ability to research new designs, technologies and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities
• Ability to think outside the box to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs with no impact on quality, reliability or maintainability.
• Must possess excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
• Must be detail oriented.
• Proven leadership and problem solving skills.
• Proven Project Management skills
