Position Location

This position is located at the Job Corps facility in Cleveland, Ohio.

Job Overview

Responsible for the preparation of all Center meals in accordance with preplanned menus, within established budgets, and in compliance with government, corporate, and management directives. Acts as lead worker for assistant cooks, food service trainees, and Center work base learning students.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Duties:

  • Prepare and cook quantity of food required according to menu and number of students and children.
  • Assist in instructing assistant cooks and student food services trainees in the safe, hygienic method of preparing and serving appetizing, appealing meals.
  • Ensure work area is safe, clean, and sanitary at all times.
  • Prepare foods as directed for special Center functions and visitors.
  • Assist in cleaning kitchen work areas and cafeteria following each meal.
  • Ensure minimum waste through efficient storage, inventory, and food utilization.
  • Help cook and serve meals, ensuring that prepared foods are held and served at proper temperatures, and all left over foods are properly chilled and stored.
  • Maintain accountability of students and property; adhere to safety practices.
  • Cultivate and maintain a climate on Center which is free of harassment, intimidation, and disrespect to provide a safe place for staff and students to work and learn.
  • Promote student attainment of career success standards through modeling appropriate skills, mentoring students, monitoring skill acquisition and intervening when inappropriate behavior is observed.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform all other duties as requested.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Dealing with a variety of people in a professional, courteous manner in diversified situations.
  • Having the ability to work under pressure as well as ensuring timely completion and accuracy of all departmental work.
  • The proper use of tools and/or equipment commonly used in an office/clerical environment.
  • Completing all mandated training requirements per government and company directives.
  • Adherence to established company safety policies and good industrial and office safety practices.
  • Compliance with company Standard Operating Procedures and Personnel policies and procedures.

Job Requirements

Mandatory:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • One (1) year experience in the food service industry.
  • Must be able to obtain a Food Handler's certificate with 30 days of employment.
  • Successfully pass background check and drug test required on the contract.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in a commercial or institutional kitchen.
  • Culinary Arts certification from an accredited institution.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a fast-paced cafeteria or industrial kitchen environment. The position requires exposure to varying temperatures, including heat from ovens and cold conditions when accessing refrigerators or freezers. The work area may occasionally be noisy due to kitchen equipment and food service operations.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires the employee to be able to frequently required to sit, stand, walk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Work somewhat close to other people, such as when sharing office space. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
