Cook

The cook prepares and serves food using proper food handling and food safety techniques, ensures that all food is presented at the correct temperature and with an appealing appearance, and maintains a clean, safe, and well-organized working environment within a healthcare setting.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook food in accordance with established recipes, menus, and dietary guidelines.
  • Serve food using proper food handling and food safety techniques to ensure quality and safety.
  • Verify that all food items are held and served at the proper temperatures and meet appearance standards.
  • Support food production in a rehab hospital cafeteria, including meal preparation for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Follow cleaning routines to maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe kitchen and service area.
  • Practice safe food storage, labeling, and rotation to minimize waste and ensure freshness.
  • Provide courteous and efficient customer service to patients, staff, and visitors in the cafeteria.
  • Perform cashier duties as needed, including handling transactions accurately and efficiently.
  • Collaborate with team members, including chefs and other food service staff, to ensure smooth meal service.
  • Adhere to all food safety, sanitation, and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Use required personal protective equipment such as gloves and hair nets while handling food.
  • Maintain an organized work station and follow all facility guidelines for attire and professional conduct.

Essential Skills

  • At least 6 months of cook experience in a restaurant or healthcare setting.
  • Proficient cooking skills with the ability to prepare a variety of menu items consistently.
  • Experience in food production within a cafeteria or similar food service environment.
  • Strong understanding of basic food handling and food safety techniques.
  • Ability to maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards in a kitchen and serving area.
  • Customer service skills to interact professionally with patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Capability to perform cashier responsibilities, including operating a point-of-sale system and handling payments.
  • Ability to work day shifts (6:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m.) or evening shifts (11:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.), including every other weekend.
  • Reliability and attention to detail in following food safety and facility procedures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Therapeutic diet preparation experience preferred, particularly in a healthcare or rehab setting.
  • ServSafe or other food preparation / food service certifications preferred.
  • Experience working in a healthcare cafeteria or hospital food service environment is a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills to follow instructions and coordinate with colleagues.

Work Environment

The schedule requires openness to day shifts (6:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m.) or evening shifts (11:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.), with work every other weekend. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to food safety and infection control practices, including the use of gloves and hair nets while handling food. The dress code includes tennis shoes and plain work pants, contributing to a professional, practical, and safety-focused atmosphere.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Milwaukee, WI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $19.00/hr.
