Job Description
Seeking a seasoned Controller who pairs deep technical accounting expertise with genuine systems and data capability. This leader owns the accounting function end to end - general ledger, month-end close, financial reporting, audit, payroll, accounts payable, fixed assets, and internal controls - for a multi-site, not-for-profit healthcare organization.
What distinguishes this role from a traditional controller position is the technical mandate. This person will own the ERP and financial systems environment - including version upgrades and platform migrations - design and maintain the reporting and reconciliation infrastructure the organization runs on, build sophisticated Excel and BI models, and lead the implementation and governance of AI agents and automation across accounting workflows. We are looking for someone who can close the books, defend a technical accounting position to the auditors, rebuild a broken data feed, and configure an AI agent - and be credible in all four.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead accounting operations and financial close, including general ledger, month-end/year-end close, reconciliations, accruals, allocations, intercompany activity, and financial statement preparation.
- Ensure financial reporting accuracy and integrity, providing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, variance analysis, and management/board reporting.
- Oversee core accounting functions, including AP, payroll accounting, fixed assets, capital projects, prepaid/accruals, debt, leases, cash, and treasury reconciliations.
- Serve as the technical accounting expert, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP, nonprofit accounting (ASC 958), healthcare revenue recognition (ASC 606), lease accounting (ASC 842), investments, grants, restricted funds, and debt covenants.
- Lead the annual financial statement audit and coordinate regulatory and tax reporting, including Form 990, Form 5500, and Medicare/Medicaid cost reporting support.
Develop and maintain a strong internal control environment, including accounting policies, segregation of duties, approval controls, system access, and documented procedures. - Own the ERP and financial systems, including system configuration, chart of accounts, integrations, master data, security, upgrades, and major system implementations or migrations.
- Lead financial systems integrations and data integrity, connecting the GL with revenue cycle, payroll, AP, banking, planning, and business intelligence systems.
Develop and enhance financial reporting and analytics, including departmental/site-level P&Ls, functional expense reporting, dashboards, automated reconciliations, and self-service reporting. - Drive automation, AI, and process improvement across accounting and reporting workflows while maintaining appropriate controls, auditability, security, and HIPAA compliance.
- Measure the impact of automation and process improvements, reducing close time, errors, rework, and manual processes while strengthening controls.
- Lead, coach, and develop the accounting team, building cross-training, documentation, succession depth, and capabilities to effectively leverage automation and AI.
- Partner cross-functionally with the CFO, FP&A, Revenue Cycle, Operations, HR, IT, Compliance, Philanthropy, and Supply Chain teams.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA required (active or inactive) or equivalent technical accounting expertise.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in an accounting leadership role.
- Proven experience owning the full accounting close and annual financial statement audit for a complex organization.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, with nonprofit and/or healthcare accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Hands-on experience administering an ERP/general ledger system, including configuration, master data, and system controls.
- Experience leading an ERP implementation, upgrade, or platform migration.
- Advanced Excel skills, including PivotTables, Power Query, Power Pivot, complex formulas, financial modeling, and large datasets.
- Strong financial reporting, data analysis, and reconciliation capabilities, including building detailed ledger reports and automated reconciliations.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex accounting and systems concepts to executives, clinicians, and board members.
