Description

Glendale Community College seeks individuals who are equity-minded leaders, committed to student success and closing equity gaps, to apply for its Full-Time Tenure-Track Counselor position. This is a full-time, 10 month-per-year, tenure-track General Counselor position. Full-time counseling assignments are thirty-five hours per week. Members of the full-time faculty are expected to devote as much time as necessary to perform the professional responsibilities of the position. Participation in professional activities, curriculum development, and campus committees is expected. The assignment may include onsite, online and hybrid and evening and/or Saturday hours.

Examples of Duties

Performs a variety of counseling functions and activities pertaining to the operation of the Program.

Provides educational, career, and personal counseling support and referrals for a diverse student body regarding topics like goal completion, basic skills, probation, financial assistance, and how to succeed in college.

Implements services to meet the needs of students in various modalities, including in-person and online, drop-in, and group counseling.

Assists students in interpreting certificate, associate degree, and transfer-related requirements in written and computerized format.

Assists students in assessing, planning, and implementing their immediate and long-range goals.

Assists students in assessing their aptitudes, abilities, and interests and advising them regarding current and future employment trends.

May develop and teach Student Development courses online and/or in-person and conduct workshops such as Orientation, Advisement, Career Planning, Goal Selection, Study Skills, Test Taking Techniques, and Note-Taking.

Contributes to innovation by working with instructional faculty cross-functionally in relation to academic programs and/or services.

May serve as a liaison to instructional and/or Student Services divisions and departments.

Participates in assessing Student Learning Outcomes, Program Learning Outcomes, and Program Reviews.

Keep accurate and appropriate records in accordance with the district and departmental policies and procedures.

Participates in campus governance and professional activities (e.g. committees, scheduling, leadership positions, faculty meetings, etc.).

Participates in professional development and continuing education activities that are designed to maintain and develop currency in the field, pedagogy (for traditional and online teaching and learning), and student support strategies, especially as they relate to student equity initiatives.

Work to achieve the colleges Institutional, Program, and Student Learning Outcomes in support of Glendale Community Colleges Mission Statement.

Maintain regular posted office hours and be accessible to students.

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.

Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Performs other counseling-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling,

OR the equivalent.

(NOTE: A Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline pursuant to Title 5, Section 53410.1)

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience developing strategies to help students persist from term-to-term and to complete coursework and programs of study.

Experience with counseling and academic advising strategies for students experiencing academic or financial challenges, including but not limited to Financial Aid counseling, Academic Pause or Notice counseling (formerly "Probation" and "Dismissal").

Experience supporting student success initiatives or programs designed to promote student engagement, retention, persistence, and completion.

Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity through culturally responsive counseling practices that promote student persistence, retention, transfer, and completion.

Experience with Student Educational Plans for California Community Colleges.

Experience providing academic counseling in a general counseling context for a wide range of students and student concerns.

Experience providing academic counseling to students in multiple modalities.

Experience using a Student Information System (SIS).

Experience using a Learning Management System (LMS).

Experience in curriculum development.

Knowledge about or experience working with students who are underrepresented in higher academia, with the goal of reducing equity gaps.

Counseling or similar experience that reflects culturally responsive counseling practices.

Counseling and/or teaching experience that reflects innovative pedagogy, including active learning and culturally responsive teaching practices.

Additional Information

Starting salary is from $72,928 to $100,966 per year depending upon education and experience. Step placement within the appropriate column is determined by Article VIII of the Glendale College Guild, Local 2276, Collective Bargaining Agreement.
