TITLE: CUED LANGUAGE TRANSLITERATOR
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of a high school diploma or general education development certificate (GED), required.
- Completion of a combination of education, training and/or experience necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
- To qualify as a cued speech transliterator, a person shall hold a current applicable transliterator certificate awarded by Testing, Evaluation and Certification Unit, Inc. (TECUnit).
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Support Services and Building Principal
JOB GOAL: Facilitate educational and social communication between deaf/hard of hearing students, their hearing peers, and staff members. Provide interpretation/transliteration of verbal and written information in educational settings. Participate as a team member of the educational team serving these students when requested.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides students with transliteration service in educational settings, including classrooms, conferences, field trips, meetings with school staff, telephone calls, after-school and extracurricular activities, and other school-related functions and activities for students and staff. Facilitates communication between hearing and deaf/hard-of-hearing individuals.
- Prepares for transliterate duties and assignments by meeting with teachers, studying the subject matter and necessary cues. Becomes familiar with classroom materials, textbooks, videos and presentations. Checks with teachers for understanding of new concepts or words being presented to students; practices the necessary cues.
- Becomes aware of students' language and skill levels, ensuring appropriate interpreting techniques. Reviews students' IEP's as appropriate to ensure that modifications and accommodations are being provided. Monitors the need for assistive technology, such as TTY's, TV closed captioning, and so forth.
- Works to establish and maintain communication with students, parents, guardians and teachers, in order to be an effective team member. Functions as a team member, while maintaining confidentiality within the team. Directs any comments or questions regarding deaf or hard-of-hearing students' academic progress or other concerns to the appropriate teacher.
- Meets with teachers in order to prepare for interpreting assignments, and to ensure the most efficient use of interpreting services.
- Performs other duties of a comparable level of type. Complies with all state statutes, federal laws, district policies and procedures, and the Code of Ethics for sign language interpreters and transliterators.
- Other duties as assigned by Director of Student Support Services (or designee).
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As per the MSEA collective bargaining agreement.
