The Cytology Specimen Processor independently supports non-gynecologic cytology operations through specimen preparation, accessioning, equipment maintenance, and workflow coordination activities. This role demonstrates strong technical competency in specimen processing workflows while maintaining quality, productivity, and documentation standards. The position plays a key role in maintaining specimen integrity and supporting efficient cytology laboratory operations.
Essential Functions:

Receive and open non-gynecologic cytology specimens from hospital and outpatient entities
Register and accession specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) with strong data integrity standards
Provide gross descriptions for non-gynecologic cytology specimens as required
Independently prepare, process, stain, and coverslip non-gynecologic cytology specimens for microscopic evaluation
Demonstrate efficiency and reliability in processing high-volume or complex specimen workflows
Independently operate and troubleshoot cytology processing equipment according to established procedures and maintenance schedules
Maintain continuity of workflow during routine technical disruptions or operational issues
Record quality assurance and maintenance activities daily in accordance with laboratory standards
Proactively identify specimen discrepancies and contribute to maintaining specimen integrity and quality assurance standards
Independently identify and resolve routine workflow and technical issues while communicating concerns appropriately
Maintain productivity standards and effectively manage assigned workload responsibilities
Complete competency training and participate in cross-training opportunities as assigned
Maintain organized specimen workflow and accurate documentation practices
Communicate specimen, workflow, or client issues effectively with cytology staff and laboratory personnel
Work collaboratively with cytology staff to troubleshoot operational or specimen-related issues
Maintain appropriate inventory and supplies for cytology processing workflows
Perform general clerical duties including filing requisitions and slides
Follow all laboratory safety, infection control, confidentiality, and regulatory protocols
Properly label and dispose of biohazard waste in accordance with local and state regulations
Develop understanding of departmental workflows and laboratory operational expectations
Adhere to all laboratory policies, procedures, and internal controls
Perform additional duties as assigned
High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED)
Maintains specimen identification and integrity throughout all processes of the department.
Must begin and complete all assignments with minimal supervision.
Must be able to collaborate with other departments, colleagues, and clients in problem solving.
Able to differentiate acceptable and unacceptable processing and staining of specimens.
Data entry skills.
Must show great attention to details and have the ability to remain calm in difficult situations.
