Job Description
LRS Consulting Services is seeking a Data Architect - Cloud, Data & Application for a 100% remote contract opportunity with our client.
We are looking for an AWS Modernization Architect to provide technical architecture and modernization leadership across a complex AWS environment involving cloud infrastructure, EMR/HBase/Spark data platforms, Java applications, and application modernization.
The architect will be responsible for designing production-ready migration and modernization strategies, understanding dependencies across infrastructure, data, and application layers, and defining phased migration, validation, rollback, and cutover approaches.
The ideal candidate should have strong hands-on architecture experience with AWS, EMR, HBase, Spark, Java/Spring, AWS networking, and modern cloud services, along with proven experience taking modernization initiatives through production.
Responsibilities
- Define the overall technical architecture and modernization approach for the AWS environment.
- Design migration strategies across AWS infrastructure, EMR/HBase/Spark, Java applications, and supporting services.
- Analyze technical dependencies between cloud infrastructure, data platforms, application runtimes, and security controls.
- Design phased migration, pilot/proof, validation, cutover, and rollback strategies.
- Assess the impact of platform and runtime upgrades on application compatibility and operational readiness.
- Provide architecture guidance for EMR, HBase, Spark, Java/Spring, ECS/Fargate, S3, KMS, and AWS networking.
- Define architecture patterns that support security, scalability, reliability, operability, and production readiness.
- Work closely with Cloud, Data, Backend, DevSecOps, Security, and QA engineers to resolve cross-platform dependencies.
- Review technical implementation plans and ensure they align with the target architecture.
- Support production migration planning, cutover readiness, rollback design, and post-migration validation.
- Identify architectural risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Ensure modernization activities maintain application compatibility and minimize production disruption.
- Support technical documentation, architecture decisions, migration evidence, and client discussions.
Must-Have Skills
- 8+ years of experience in Solution Architecture, Cloud Architecture, Platform Architecture, or Enterprise Architecture.
- Strong hands-on experience with AWS cloud architecture and modernization.
- Strong experience with AWS EMR, HBase, and Spark.
- Strong understanding of Java/Spring application architecture and modernization.
- Experience with AWS networking, including VPC, subnets, routing, security groups, and load balancing.
- Experience designing cloud/application/data migration strategies.
- Experience with production migration, cutover, rollback, and validation planning.
- Strong understanding of dependencies between infrastructure, data platforms, application runtimes, and security.
- Experience designing phased modernization approaches across multiple environments.
- Ability to assess application compatibility during platform/runtime upgrades.
- Strong technical communication and ability to work across multiple engineering teams.
Good-to-Have Skills
- Experience with Amazon Linux 2023
- Experience with Amazon Corretto 17 / Java 17 modernization.
- Experience with ECS and Fargate.
- Experience with S3 and KMS.
- Experience with Kerberos in Hadoop/HBase/EMR environments.
- Experience with CloudFormation or Terraform.
- Experience with HBase 1.x to HBase 2.x modernization.
- Experience with EMR version upgrades, particularly EMR 5.x and EMR 7.x.
- Experience with migration rollback and disaster recovery architecture.
- Experience with cloud security architecture and vulnerability remediation.
- Experience working on large-scale enterprise modernization programs.
The base range for this contract position is $80.00 - $100.00 per hour, depending on experience.
Our pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hires of this position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
