    Day Camp Director

    The Day Camp Director is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, programming, and camper experience of Camp Chandler’s Day Camp program. Reporting directly to the Camp Director, this position provides leadership and direction to Day Camp Counselors and ensures that the program operates safely, smoothly, and consistently with Camp Chandler’s mission and standards.

    The Day Camp Director is responsible for developing engaging weekly themes, coordinating daily all-camp activities, managing transportation and bus-duty schedules, and serving as the primary point of leadership for the Day Camp program.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Oversee the daily operation of the Day Camp program and ensure the program runs safely, efficiently, and smoothly.

    • Provide leadership, direction, and support to Day Camp Counselors.

    • Communicate regularly with the Camp Director regarding the overall operation of Day Camp, camper needs, staff performance, and any concerns that arise.

    • Promptly report significant camper, staff, safety, behavioral, or operational concerns to the Camp Director.

    • Develop engaging weekly Day Camp themes that provide structure and excitement throughout the summer.

    • Plan daily all-camp activities and programs that align with each week’s theme.

    • Create and maintain a weekly and daily Day Camp schedule that keeps campers engaged and provides a balanced camp experience.

    • Coordinate with the Activities Director and other program areas to incorporate activities and specialty programs into the Day Camp schedule.

    • Organize and manage Day Camp bus-duty schedules, including ensuring appropriate staff coverage and supervision.

    • Ensure Day Camp Counselors understand their daily schedules, responsibilities, assignments, and expectations.

    • Monitor the camper experience and make adjustments to programming when needed to ensure campers are engaged, safe, and having a positive experience.

    • Assist with camper placement, transitions, and group management as needed.

    • Help ensure Day Camp maintains appropriate camper-to-staff ratios and adequate supervision at all times.

    • Support Day Camp Counselors with camper behavior management and communicate recurring or significant concerns to the Camp Director.

    • Ensure Day Camp programming follows all Camp Chandler and YMCA policies, procedures, and safety standards.

    • Conduct regular check-ins with Day Camp Counselors to provide support, address concerns, and maintain strong team communication.

    • Help create a fun, welcoming, inclusive, and energetic environment for Day Camp campers and staff.

    • Complete additional programming, administrative, and camp responsibilities as assigned by the Camp Director.

    Expectations

    The Day Camp Director should be organized, energetic, dependable, and confident in leading both staff and campers. This individual should have strong communication and problem-solving skills and be comfortable managing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced camp environment. The ideal candidate is creative and enthusiastic about developing programming while also being attentive to safety, structure, and the overall camper experience.

    The Day Camp Director should serve as a positive role model for Day Camp staff and campers and work to ensure that every camper has a fun, safe, engaging, and memorable experience at Camp Chandler.

    The Day Camp Director is a non-residential summer staff position and does not live on Camp Chandler’s property overnight. This position is primarily responsible for the Day Camp program during its scheduled operating hours and is expected to arrive prepared and on time for each scheduled workday. While the Day Camp Director is not an overnight staff member, they are expected to communicate effectively with the Camp Director and leadership team regarding any Day Camp needs or concerns that arise outside of regular program hours.
