A dental assistant supports the dentist in delivering quality patient care by preparing patients and treatment areas, assisting chairside during procedures, maintaining instruments and equipment, and ensuring efficient patient flow. The role may support various dental specialties, including general dentistry, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and oral surgery.
Key Responsibilities
Assist orthodontists during a variety of orthodontic procedures
Prepare and set up treatment rooms and equipment
Prepare patients for orthodontic treatment
Assist with brackets, bands, wires, aligners, and other orthodontic appliances
Take dental impressions, digital scans, radiographs, and orthodontic records as directed
Sterilize instruments and maintain proper infection control procedures
Provide patients with instructions regarding oral hygiene, braces, aligners, and appliance care
Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records
Coordinate and track orthodontic lab cases and appliances
Support efficient patient flow and clinical operations
Communicate effectively with patients, orthodontists, and other team members
Maintain a positive and professional patient experience
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required
Completion of a dental assisting program or at least 1 year of dental assisting experience
Current dental assisting permit required
Current CPR certification required
Current X-ray certification required for chairside duties
Knowledge of sterilization, infection control, and dental procedures
Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills
