Job Purpose

The Alamance County Sheriff's Office is currently seeking applicants for a full-time Sworn Deputy to assist in the Patrol Division. Under occasional supervision, an employee in this position performs a variety of general law enforcement work for Alamance County in one of the major divisions of the Sheriff's Office including uniformed patrol, civil courts, and criminal investigations. After becoming familiar with duties and responsibilities, the employee is expected to always display actions that demonstrate protection of lives, property, and the rights of citizens within Alamance County.

Work Schedule: This is an FLSA non-exempt position. A Deputy is subject to 12-hour shifts, including holidays and weekends, and is required to wear a uniform. The Alamance County Sheriffs Office has two permanent days shifts (6am-6pm) and two permanent night shifts (6pm-6am) within the Patrol Division. Shift assignments will be determined by the Patrol Administration. This position also includes an additional $4,000-dollar shift stipend for working the 12-hour shift.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs in an assigned area of the County, answers complaints and requests for assistance, investigates crimes and disturbances; interviews witnesses, questions suspects, gathers and preserves evidence, makes arrests and testifies in court.
  • Provides patrol of highways and roadways within the county for safety and compliance of laws.
  • Serves various types of civil papers; explains briefly the meaning of papers being served, conducts sale of personal and real property at public auction; ensures proper amount of money is collected.
  • Opens and closes courts at designated times; maintains order in the courtroom; assists defendants in completing affidavits, sears defendants in; seats jury in place when selected; escorts trial jury to jury room when directed by judge; assist and escorts grand jury.
  • Prepares papers for and assists in the transportation of prisoners; escorts prisoners to court and maintains custody there; escorts defendants to clerks office to pay fines; prepares the necessary papers for defendants ordered into custody by the courts; obtains release orders and searches prisoners and logs property, records arrest.
  • Cooperates with law enforcement officials of other governmental agencies, local, State and Federal, in making investigations and arrests.
  • Provides protective escorts and maintains order at public gatherings and events.
  • May operate speed detection devices and/or breathe analyzers.
  • Prepares and maintains daily reports concerning criminal activity; prepares related reports as requested.
  • Assists in the preparation of crime prevention programs, develops contacts amount local community organizations and businesses.
  • Preforms any other related work as directed and needed.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Possess a valid North Carolina drivers license.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the following: Oral Interview, Background Check, Polygraph Examination, Psychological Evaluation and Drug Screening.
  • Currently certified as a North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer (successfully passed NC Basic Law Enforcement Training-BLET).

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of law enforcement experience or patrol experience.
  • Ability to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and on-call hours.

Computer Skills: Basic Knowledge in MS Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)

The position will be located at the Alamance County Sheriff's Office. The position does require interaction with administration, supervisors, court personnel, the public and other members of the Alamance County Sheriff's Office.

Health Insurance - Full-time employees are eligible for medical/health (Cigna Insurance) benefits upon the 1st of the month following 30 days of employment.

Alamance County Government currently offers three plans of medical/pharmacy benefit options including 2 Standard PPO plans and a High-Deductible Health Plan with HSA.

Dental Benefit - Alamance County offers one dental insurance (Delta Dental) plan for FT employees at no cost. The plan, if elected, would be effective the first of the month following 30 days of FT employment.

Vision Insurance - A voluntary vision program (Superior Vision) is available to FT employees. The current PPO style plan allows employees to seek treatment and hardware from any vision care provider of their choice. The plan, if elected, would be effective the first of the month following 30 days of FT employment. Coverage must be elected within your first 30 days of FT employment or upon a qualifying event.
