Job Summary

NATURE OF WORK Under general supervision, performs professional nursing and health related services of considerable difficulty to prisoners within the Yuma County Detention Center; serves as a lead worker; this position has department specific responsibility.

Nature of Work

(Illustrative Only) Assesses, develops, implements and evaluates prisoners medical needs, care plans and preventative measures; interviews prisoners to obtain medical information and prescription data; participates in suicide watches of at-risk prisoners for signs and symptoms of self-infliction of harm; responds to medical emergencies; assesses communicable diseases and reports their existence to the appropriate health authorities; provides medications, immunizations, and treatments as prescribed by a physician; administers Hepatitis shots, TB tests, blood samples and processes specimens to the laboratory; documents and maintains paper/electronic health records/charts relating to diagnosis, treatment and progress; prepares statistical reports; orders and maintains medication and medical equipment; actively participates in cost containment measures; provides health-related education and counseling; conducts orientation and training to new hires and staff; collaborates with physicians and other health care providers; assists physicians with special procedures and treatments; maintains appropriate security and confidentiality of medical records and other sensitive information encountered in the performance of his/her duties; may supervise, train, and evaluate personnel; regular and reliable attendance is required; performs other duties as assigned.

Experience and Education

Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing and a valid unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Arizona State Board of Nursing (or issued by another state recognized by the Arizona Board of Nursing as a multi-compact license state) OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; nurse program graduates or out-of-state transfers must obtain their licensure by the Arizona State Board of Nursing within two (2) months of being hired.; failure to obtain or maintained required licensure shall be grounds for separation.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and two (2) years experience as a Registered Nurse preferably in a Corrections/Detention Center:

Special Requirements: Required to successfully complete a background check, polygraph, and drug test prior to appointment; must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: County policies and procedures; Federal, and state laws pertaining to health care; Sheriff's Office detention facility policy and procedures; nursing theories, principles and practices; health sciences including health maintenance, promotion and prevention; principles of health education and counseling; principles of epidemiology; medical instruments and laboratory equipment; community assessment and resources; principles and practices of supervision; required detention and security training.

Skill in: Nursing assessment and diagnosis of physical and psycho-social health needs; applying nursing principles and practices; monitoring and evaluating prisoner's progress; community principles of health education; exercising initiative and judgment in selecting proper nursing intervention; responding appropriately to emergency situations; preparing complete and accurate reports and records; planning, evaluating, and directing the work of others; dealing impartially with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds; operating computerized technology and job-related software applications.

Ability to: Read, learn, understand, apply and follow rules, regulations, instructions and medical practices and procedures; provide effective nursing services and patient care and in the use of medical equipment utilized; handle and recognize unusual medical, physical or mental conditions of inmates; supervise, lead and delegate tasks; react quickly and effectively to emergency situations; write reports, complete forms, accurate documentation, and compile statistics; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with supervisor, employees, other agencies and the public, including law enforcement and physicians; follow written and verbal instructions; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; perform the essential functions of the job specifications with or without reasonable accommodation; exercise initiative and independent judgement.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is performed in a secure detention facility (correctional institution) and in a general office environment; direct inmate contact; work a variety of scheduled shifts, irregular hours, and/or on-call status, as necessary; may work non-standard hours, to include shift work, holidays, and weekends; wear protective gear, as required; exposure to body fluids, communicable diseases, and unpleasant odors; walk, stand and sit for a period of time; frequent standing, walking, lifting, pushing/pulling, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, and climbing stairs; visual and muscular dexterity to operate: computer equipment, telephone, and two-way radio maintaining constant vigilance to the surrounding area; utilized two-way radio to hear and respond to: radio communications, voice instructions, and/or commands; random urinalysis testing; annual TB skin testing.

Medical Coverage Category

The YCEBT is a self-funded medical plan administered by BlueCross BlueShield of Arizona (BCBSAZ). The employee is able to select from two (2) medical plan options with six (6) tiers that will best suit the employees needs, dependents or families.

Plan Option 1: Preferred Provider Option A (PPO) or PPO A 1100 deductible. Employees who participate in the "Wellness Incentive" will receive a $30 monthly premium reduction by completing a preventative visit.

Plan Option 2: High Deductible High Plan - Health Savings Account (HDHP-HSA) with a 1700 deductible. Employees who participate in the "Wellness Incentive" will receive a $30 monthly premium reduction by completing a preventative visit.

Employer contributes a total of $800.04 to employees Health Savings Account. If employees select Employee only and participate in the "Wellness Incentive" employees can receive up to 360.00 contribution to a Limited Purpose FSA card to be used for medical or dental purposes.

International Medical Solutions (IMS): IMS is available to employees who are enrolled in YCEBT Medical PPO Plan A and HDHP. Members enrolled in the PPO plan can pay as little as $5 copay for doctor visits & prescription drug services, with no maximum cap. High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) pay toward their deductible until is met. After the deductible is satisfied, the plan will pay 80% of the services covered, and the member will be responsible for the remaining 20% coinsurance.
