Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for a Director of Accounting for a mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting innovative initiatives that create positive global impact. This is a fully remote opportunity open to candidates across the U.S., with occasional travel for team meetings.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Our client is seeking a collaborative and strategic accounting leader to oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, payroll, compliance, and internal controls for a growing nonprofit organization. This role partners closely with executive leadership to ensure strong financial stewardship while driving process improvements, operational excellence, and organizational sustainability. The ideal candidate is a thoughtful people leader who enjoys building high-performing teams and leveraging technology to support long-term growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and payroll teams while fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture.

  • Oversee financial reporting, payroll, general ledger operations, cash management, budgeting, and internal controls.

  • Partner cross-functionally to provide financial guidance, improve processes, and strengthen organizational decision-making.

  • Direct annual audits, tax preparation, compliance initiatives, and risk management activities.

  • Drive continuous improvement of accounting systems, workflows, policies, and technology to enhance efficiency and scalability.

  • Present financial reporting, forecasts, and strategic insights to executive leadership and the Board.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 10+ years of leadership experience overseeing nonprofit accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls.

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. nonprofit accounting principles, GAAP, payroll operations, and compliance best practices.

  • Experience improving accounting systems, workflows, and operational processes to support organizational growth.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to translate complex financial information for diverse stakeholders.

  • Passion for mission-driven work with a collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset focused on innovation and continuous improvement.
