Title: Director of Fleet Operations
Employment Status: Salaried, Exempt
Location: Houston, Texas (Onsite daily Monday through Friday with up to 25% travel)
Salary Range: $120,000 – $150,000
Position Overview
This role is responsible for overseeing fleet performance, safety, compliance, maintenance, and cost efficiency. The position plays a critical role in supporting nationwide operations through fleet modernization, data-driven decision making, and continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership, operational expertise, and financial acumen to ensure reliability, scalability, and long-term performance of fleet assets.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute fleet strategy including asset lifecycle planning, technology integration, and scalability to support company growth
- Oversee daily fleet operations including routing, dispatch, utilization, and performance optimization
- Implement telematics and data-driven solutions to improve efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and enhance delivery performance
- Direct preventive and corrective maintenance programs to maximize uptime and extend asset life
- Manage vendor, repair, and OEM relationships to ensure cost-effective and high-quality service delivery
- Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, EPA, OSHA, and all applicable regulatory requirements
- Lead fleet safety programs, driver training, and incident prevention initiatives
- Develop and manage fleet operating and capital budgets, including fuel, maintenance, insurance, and acquisition costs
- Track and analyze key performance metrics such as cost per mile, fuel efficiency, and maintenance spend to drive cost optimization
- Partner cross-functionally with operations, sales, and customer teams to align fleet capabilities with business objectives
- Support emergency response and time-sensitive operations through fleet readiness and rapid deployment
- Provide reporting and insights to executive leadership on fleet performance, risks, and improvement opportunities
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, Transportation, or related field (advanced degree preferred)
- 8+ years of fleet management experience with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity
- Strong knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations, fleet telematics, maintenance systems, and fuel management practices
- Proven ability to manage operating and capital budgets and optimize total cost of ownership
- Experience with fleet management software, telematics platforms, and data analytics tools
- Demonstrated success improving safety, efficiency, and operational performance in a distribution or transportation environment
- Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Ability to travel as needed and support operational demands, including urgent or after-hours situations
