At Baystate Health, we know exceptional surgical care begins with exceptional leadership. We're seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Surgical Suites to lead one of the region's largest and most complex perioperative environments in Springfield, MA.

Reporting directly to the Vice President of Surgical Services, this executive leadership role provides strategic and operational oversight for the Baystate Medical Center Inpatient Operating Rooms and Chestnut Surgery Center, leading Operating Room Nursing and Anesthesia Technician teams while partnering closely with physician leaders, executive leadership, and multidisciplinary teams across Baystate Health.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As the Director of Surgical Suites, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of perioperative services across Baystate Health by:

  • Leading one of New England's premier surgical programs
  • Driving operational excellence, patient safety, and quality outcomes
  • Partnering with renowned surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing leaders, and executive leadership
  • Influencing strategic growth initiatives and future surgical services

Provide Strategic Leadership

  • Lead the overall operations of Operating Room Nursing and Anesthesia Technician services for Baystate Medical Center and Chestnut Surgery Center.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership, physician partners, and leaders across Baystate Health to advance system-wide perioperative initiatives.
  • Develop long-term strategic plans that support growth, innovation, and operational excellence.
  • Forecast future service needs, emerging technologies, and resource requirements to support expanding surgical volumes.

Drive Operational Excellence

  • Ensure efficient management of staffing, scheduling, equipment, and surgical resources.
  • Oversee departmental budgets while maximizing operational efficiency and financial performance.
  • Implement Lean principles and evidence-based process improvement initiatives to optimize workflow and patient throughput.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement using AORN Guidelines for Perioperative Practice.

Champion Quality & Patient Safety

  • Promote a culture where safety, quality, and exceptional patient experiences are the foundation of every decision.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives focused on clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
  • Partner with surgeons, anesthesia teams, nursing leaders, office managers, and scheduling coordinators to optimize surgical workflow and daily operations.
  • Serve as a system-wide leader for conflict resolution and Culture of Safety initiatives.

Lead and Develop High-Performing Teams

  • Inspire, mentor, and develop managers, supervisors, nurses, and technical staff.
  • Foster employee engagement, professional growth, accountability, and collaboration.
  • Support talent acquisition, succession planning, performance management, and leadership development.
  • Build an inclusive environment where teamwork, innovation, and respect flourish.

Ensure Regulatory Excellence

  • Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and accreditation standards, including:

  • The Joint Commission (TJC)

  • Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH)

  • OSHA

  • Other applicable regulatory agencies

  • Oversee development, implementation, and communication of perioperative policies and procedures.

Build Strong Partnerships

  • Collaborate with physician leadership, executive teams, vendors, and interdisciplinary departments to advance surgical services.
  • Support facility expansion, renovation projects, equipment planning, and capital initiatives.
  • Participate in value analysis and vendor negotiations to ensure high-value care and operational efficiency.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree, required
  • Licensed RN in MA
  • BLS CPR through American Heart Association
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room- Competency & Credentialing Institute
  • 3 years of experience in Surgical Services, preferably Operating Room nursing required
  • 3 years of experience in a leadership role, preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive healthcare leadership experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Experience working in a large, high-volume operating room environment strongly preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of perioperative operations and Operating Room workflows
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary surgical teams
  • Expertise in Lean methodology, process improvement, and operational excellence
  • Strong financial acumen including budgeting, forecasting, and performance metrics
  • Experience with vendor management, contract negotiations, and capital planning
  • Ability to lead organizational change and complex projects
  • Strong business planning and strategic leadership skills
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities
  • Experience with Cerner and Microsoft Office applications preferred

Compensation

Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.

$158,371.00 - $182,041.00 - $215,342.00
