POSITION SUMMARY The District Nurse (RN) coordinates and provides comprehensive school health services across RYSS Texas Public Schools to promote student health, safety, wellness, and academic success. The position provides direct nursing care, oversees health services and required screenings, supports students with chronic or complex health needs, supervises assigned nursing staff, and ensures compliance with applicable health and nursing requirements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Education/ Certification

  • Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program.
  • Current, valid Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the Texas Board of Nursing or a state participating in the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC).
  • Current CPR/AED certification (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers).

Experience

  • 3 years of professional nursing experience (school health experience preferred)

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of school nursing practices, student health assessment, first aid, emergency response, chronic condition management, and applicable health regulations.
  • Knowledge of medication administration, mandated health screenings, and confidential health recordkeeping.
  • Strong organizational, communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and health protocols.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, school personnel, healthcare providers, and community agencies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise professional judgment, and respond effectively during emergencies.

Major Responsibilities and Duties Nursing and Student Health Services

  • Provide direct nursing care, assess student health concerns, respond to illness and injury, and secure emergency medical care when necessary.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with chronic, complex, or specialized medical needs.
  • Administer and oversee medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, district procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Coordinate required health screenings, including vision, hearing, spinal, and acanthosis nigricans screenings, in accordance with state requirements.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians and coordinate referrals and follow-up care with healthcare providers and community agencies.
  • Conduct home visits when appropriate to address health concerns affecting student attendance, access, or learning.
  • Advocate for student health, safety, and access to services that support educational success.

Collaboration and Health Education

  • Collaborate with principals, counselors, special education staff, teachers, families, and healthcare providers to address student health needs.
  • Participate in ARD Committee meetings when appropriate and provide health- related information to support IEPs and IHPs.
  • Provide health education and training to students, employees, and families regarding health conditions, emergency procedures, and preventive practices.
  • Support campus and district responses to medical emergencies, communicable diseases, and other health-related concerns.
  • Follow mandatory reporting requirements related to suspected child abuse or neglect.

Administration and Compliance

  • Coordinate with district leadership to evaluate and improve school health programs, procedures, and services.

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), health clinic aides, and other designated personnel as assigned.

  • Coordinate required training for unlicensed diabetes care assistants and other personnel supporting student health needs.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential student health records, including immunizations, medications, treatments, screenings, and IHPs, in accordance with applicable privacy requirements.

  • Maintain clinic supplies, equipment, and emergency resources necessary to support student health services.

  • Ensure health services comply with applicable federal and state laws, Texas Department of State Health Services requirements, Texas Board of Nursing regulations, State Board of Education requirements, and RYSS policies and procedures.

  • Maintain required nursing licensure, certifications, competencies, and professional development.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Direct and supervise the work of Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) and assigned health clinic aides across assigned campuses.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including AED; adaptive equipment for students with special needs; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals. Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting. Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension. Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or more); assisting with positioning and mobility of students with physical disabilities; may include physical restraint as permitted by policy and training. Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases. Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; ability to maintain emotional control and professional judgment under stress.
